Myself and 2 friends just got back to snowy Toronto Canada after a short but awesome trip to Guatemala.

We flew out on a Sunday and then flew back on the Friday. The trip was way too short for my typical likings, but we had our reasons.

Originally our flights were supposed to leave from Buffalo (for cheaper flights). We drove to buffalo in a snowstorm in a 40 year old diesel Mercedes with bald summer tires from the 80’s. As soon as we crossed the border and we’re celebrating with a beer, we got an alert that our flight was cancelled due to snow. The airline said we would have to wait 2 days to catch the next flight from Buffalo (which would have significantly cut into our trip)... we managed to get switched onto a flight leaving from Toronto the next day. Pretty ironic, but we finished our beers, had some chicken wings, and then started the drive back home to sleep in our beds before flying out the next morning.

We arrived in Guatemala City and took an Uber to Antigua.

That night we went out for food and drinks. The Mezcal is awesome!

The next day we walked around the town and were able to pickup our rental bikes that evening from Moto Tours Guatemala. Jose and Marlo were fantastic. They helped us plan our route and all their recommendations were great. They do tours, have a hostel and a little bar. Very nice people.

We went for a short test ride that night and filled the bikes up with gas. Next morning we left at 7am. Quite chilly out at that time. Long johns were on!

We made it to Lake Atitlan in the town of Pana. We paid to store the bike at a nearby lot and took the boat across to San Marcos. 756349AC-271E-4813-A5B0-B67E4A856B8A.jpeg 87B341D1-5342-4EEA-87F4-0E45D169863F.jpeg 17CBFBDA-B54B-41D9-B5A9-A12BFEC9006D.jpeg

When we came back on the boat the next day we had a flat tire. We went to a nearby shop. We had an extra tube on us which was used because the tube had a big rip. 1A54DB6C-4B54-421F-97D5-194761EE42E7.jpeg 63C6B949-7517-4FD6-8F98-8A00CB143C19.jpeg BC6D6F56-B7E3-468E-8675-BFF83CC32016.jpeg 162F3D19-119A-436A-8CA3-8C49A720F630.jpeg

Trucks with 5 trailers long. Then we took the river boat across on our way to Playa El Paredon. We stayed at Driftwood Surfer Beach Hostel. The owner is a nice guy and helped us with the best route back! Good food/rooms/bar/beach etc.

The route back was fantastic. I’ll try to make a google maps link. A dozen river crossings and very fun terrain. 0192D676-E1B8-413A-A1FF-3856BD3B3F4D.jpeg A915B37F-591F-4F38-BAC3-4B5F7CA34436.jpeg A95412CA-1BD3-43E6-AEEF-AB541ADE343A.jpeg 2CA1BCA3-B6E0-4B1E-A582-C8CFA9C1A5FB.jpeg

The view at sunset from the rooftop of Moto Tours Guatemala. We stayed in the hostel there. They have secure parking! Great place.

Sounds like you had a great trip! Glad you enjoyed your time in Guatemala. There is a some awesome riding between Antigua and Lake Atitlan. It gets a bit flat down by the coast - but the ferry boats are a lot of fun. Cheers!

Great report! I was attracted to your report by the title. I just did a similar thing in Colombia. Get in, get it done, and get home! Looks like you had a terrific time.

Awesome! Thats what its all about.

Just make sure to NOT take the road between San Pedro de La Laguna and Santiago Atitlan (south west corner of Lake Atitlan). Even the local riders say its dangerous. You can get a police escort through there if you want, but I suggest to just avoid that road.
