I planned to ride from Austin to Big Bend then up to NM to do the first two legs of the NM BDR. In short, I overloaded my Givi top rack and it broke on my 2nd day of riding (my first day off-road in Big Bend).

It was my first trip planned on this bike and a bit of a let down. I did learn a ton though. Here are my top 5 learning for a beginner:
    1. Dont overload your top case
    2. The R1250GS is a touring bike that can ride off-road, not a dirt bike you can ride on-road
    3. Never, ever let off the throttle, even a hair, in ankle deep sand
    4. Lay out everything you are packing and reduce it by 20% until you actually use everything you bring (except tools of course, always bring those)
    5. Most importantly and what I definitely did not do, take your time

Ankle deep sand at times... Too many times unfortunately. Also, look at that Alt Rider skid plate!
