Nina, very inspiring story. Really upset I was not able to come to hear your story at the BMW club. I also grew up in Madrid and we are almost neighbors now. I have heard about you from some guys in the BMW club. Hopefully one day we can meet and maybe even ride around here and I can hear your stories first hand.
I hope I can go on an adventure like this one one day. For now, I will just look at your pictures and your story and dream about it.

Soooo you are close!!! Northfield, MN.... I count that as neighbors!!
I would love to get together and ride together. Weather is warming up, so that is easy to accomplish. Just send me a message and we can have a fun day.

If you are both at the Hiawatha Rally you could meet up there and have a nice chat around the campfire. Just an Idea :)

I have read all 48 pages of this thread. What a great tale this is . My wife kept asking me if I was going to turn the lights out and go to sleep but I couldn't until I had read just one more. Is there any way you could post a map of the trip showing in general terms the routes you took through each country? It seems like every road you took was paved except for the parts of ripio down south of Santiago, is that fairly accurate?

    Glad you enjoyed my RR.
I will try to do what you ask for.
I must say main roads are paved in Colombia, Ecuador Peru and Chile. Argentina has some sections on on Ruta 40.
I will try to create a map but if you can log in here

you may zoom in to where I went. In Colombia I had problems with my Spot, so it was my phone which tracked me in the remainder of the trip. Some places it failed like reaching Ushuaia, but in general it is accurate.
Give me some time and I will post each country with a separate map.

Wow! I kept up with your report but to see it on a map makes it real.

Muchas gracias. This makes a lot of sense. My friend and I are planning on getting a trip together down there next year. Perhaps time it to be in Colombia near the beginning of February and finishing up by getting as far as Osorno or thereabouts then shipping our bikes back from Santiago like you did.

I highly recommend you purchase the maps Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Chile here in the US before you leave. You will have a difficult time to find maps there unless you order online and wait in the hotel.
Here is the link to the website. It is a Germans site but click on English and you will be able to understand.

The maps are water resistant, I have folded them many times to the page I needed while traveling and they hold up great.

Hope that helps for you planning. I will follow you if you post a RR :)

In addition if you reach to Osorno, try to go further South to Puerto Montt and reach the island of Chiloe by Ferry. . The northern part the peninsula of Ankud is such a nice ride, do not miss that. Was one of the highlights of my trip.
