I'm glad I found this thread. I've been considering a new bike. The AT has fork issues, which were maybe solved on the 18 model with a coating. But that's a bandaid fix in my opinion. The 790R has a shock failing, and that's still a mystery. The T7 is taking its sweet effing time getting here. Triumph looks fun, and I've owned a Daytona triple which I loved, but it's not exactly what I want. Come on Adventure 490?

If you’re waiting for a flawless bike...you’ll be spending a lot of time on advrider while lots of folks ride their problem free 790, at, t7, etc.

I'm definitely not waiting for the perfect bike. It's more about learning from others experiences on the big bikes while waiting for a bike I'm excited about. I guess I did sound like I was putting these other bikes down and dreaming lol. My bad. To me, the opportunity for ktm with the 490 is a big one. I've been looking for a replacement to my 640. And although I have dreams of being able to ride big bikes like the pros, small bikes fast has always been more fun to me. Dunno.

But you also don't want to pay a premium for a bike that falls apart after 3K Miles

Has anyone seen a shock failure on a 2020 model 790?

Another 2019 790 R shock failure @ 2000 miles...at least 2/3 of riding is off-road, and I don't really baby the bike (I'm around 210 lbs with gear). Typical harshness on a couple short commutes, then oil dripping onto cat. Local dealer is G-Force Powersports in Lakewood, CO, and they simply had a "REPAIR KIT ADV. R" (Part no. RP10013) shipped to them along with shock fluid, and the resolution states "Replaced Shock Head Seal. Filled/Bled Air from oil. Applied 232 PSI nitrogen to shock bladder."

Looks like if it wasn't under warranty would have run me $445...yikes.

Here's to hoping the tech knows to look for anything else bad on the shock other than the seal...and maybe that the higher pressure and new parts will last longer this time. :|

The repair kit should just be the Rally shock!

    I had a shock failure @ 4000km, leaking oil.

50/50 road / offroad. Offroad being mostly light unsealed roads, maybe 1-200 km on heavy corrugated roads in 45c heat, i'm 80kg.

Dealer said they rebuilt it, not sure of the details what failed / what was replaced.

TLDR - has anyone in Australia had a rear shock fail?

Just read PominOz did... What month 2019?

Mine's May 2019, have done 10000kms with no issue (re: rear shock) so far.

I installed camel ADV heat shield on day 1...

My dealer called me with some info about my new shock that was replaced under warranty. He was told that it is an updated shock with a new/different new shim stack, updated shock shaft and seal head. I'm curious if any WP dealer has any information on updates that have been issued through the WP channel.

That would be good news if accurate.

If it wouldn't be under warranty I would take my money to Hyperpro and let them upgrade the shock (assuming internals fit). Or let them build a real shock.

Never heard of them in the US. If I would have had to spend my own money I would have upgraded to a WP Trac shock. Long track record in competition and is supported by numerous WP dealers in the US.
It appears up to this point most everybody is getting the repairs covered under warranty. Hopefully the changes that were made solve the leaking problem.

    Hi to Everyone!

I've been a silent reader for years, this is my (I believe) first or second post here...

Just yesterday discovered that my 790 Adventure R shock is leaking oil as well. The bike has 4300 km on the clock, would say 60% unpaved roads / 40% tar. Bought as one of the first available in Berlin back in March 2019. Just contacted the dealer. We agreed on the phone that I will remove the shock and bring it to them. Been to an yearly service like 2 weeks ago - no findings. Since then the bike was not in use (what a pity :-/ )

As you can see it's in an early stadium, first drops out on the spring and the red collar. But already clearly visible on the shock and cat.

Will keep you updated about the development.

Edit: I'm riding a 2019 790 Adventure R, bought in March last year as one of the first that hit the market here in Germany

    Cheers,
    Dawid

Thanks for checking in. Can you add or edit your post to include which year bike you own?
