I stopped at the Northwest Trading Post only to find out they quit making sandwiches. I had a soda and some banana nut bread.
I was treated to this view.

This one was taken a Doughton Park. I just got off the bike and under the roof of the little visitors center when the clouds let lose. A few minutes later the sun came out and I was back on the road.

I stayed in Bill's Bunk when I was there.....just me and Will the whole time. Great place to stay.....especially when it's continuous rain.

I agree. There were a few people there everyone was nice and the washroom was clean and the showered were hot. Can't ask for much more than that.

For years I have seen signs around Roanoke Mountain for this place so I decided to leave the BRP and check it out.
The road also lead to a closed BRP campground. It looked nice and I was later told by a local it had been closed because it was the least used campground. Kind of hard to believe being that close to Roanoke.

Apparently Roanoke is a railroad town.

The park has a zoo, so I made a donation and took a walk around.

Yes it is. I didn't go up that far, I figured I'd save something for another trip.

I thought I might have interrupted something, but they didn't seem to mind.

I take Labor Day week off every year for a ride. Typically I ride the Parkway, spend a few days in Asheville and surrounding areas. I haven't decided if that's where I'm going yet this year but was wondering about the road surface conditions on the Parkway North of Asheville toward Virginia. I haven't been on that section for a while and didn't know if they were still resurfacing or were finished. Thanks.

I try to hit Willville at least once a season just to hang out around other enthusiasts for an evening. Always laid back when I've visited.

There was a little of this chip/seal going on when I was down. Here is something I borrowed from a post of FB from July 26:

Blue ridge parkway Riders . They are paving the Parkway between Julian Price Lake and Moses Cone. The type of pavement where they put down tar and loose gravel on top. Lots and lots of loose gravel and dust. Also doing the same thing on parkway from Highway 80 exit. North on Parkway for about 3 to 4 miles. Be careful and ride safely.

    And from the NPS website:
Approximately 115 miles of parkway qualify for pavement preservation treatment this year beginning in May 2019, and continuing through November 2019. Work will be on hold during the high traffic month of October.

These sections of parkway are scheduled for pavement preservation work in 2019:

    • Milepost 175 to 217: Mabry Mill to Fancy Gap (42 miles)
    • Milepost 241 to 262, Doughton Park to West Jefferson area (21 miles)
    • Milepost 292 to 345, Cone Memorial Park to NC Minerals Museum area (53 miles)
