I think he is really enjoy'n it. I havent had the chance to ride with him at all. But I think he and his wife have been out every weekend.
Sorry you haven't been able to ride with him . Back to skinny rims . The 908 is a bit of a chore to break loose when changing it on that skinny rim too but far easier than the 950 w that bead lock and the Scorpion . rear that is ...
Si, claro..... no worries mate. I do a little cocktail hour and internet posting myself. I dont make much sense either. I'm pretty much convinced that for my trip the 2.5 is the right choice. Saludos.......
Ah yes, spoken like a true fourm poster. Good on-ya mate. This thread has leaned me more to the 2.50 also. I understand crashmasters quest for a wheel that will work with most of the tires he finds along his great ride. but, for the rest of us ?????? I'm still not totaly convinced. A 130 just seems make sence to me. But Im not pretending that I realy know whats best.
found some good info on this thread for some of my questions. but, i'll still repeat one Q.. can the Excel takasago rim (1.6 front & 2,5 rear) be used on the 9x0 with the stock spoke, nipples & hubs ?
I'm having similar concerns w/ my 800 GS. I have found a 2.75" Sun rim that may be a good compromise. <table cellpaddin="0" border="0" cellspacing="0" width="100%"><tbody><tr><td class="loop2"> </td> <td class="loop2">RSWM418</td> <td class="loop2">SUN WM4.5 (2.75) x 18" ALUMINUM RIM</td></tr></tbody></table> http://www.buchananspokes.net/categories/rims_sun.asp <table cellpaddin="0" border="0" cellspacing="0" width="100%"><tbody><tr><td class="loop2"> </td> <td class="loop2"> </td> <td class="loop2"> </td></tr></tbody></table>
I laced the excell A60 1.6 to a stock front hub, custom spokes required though. Next I'll do a 2.5 rear, just need to find a rear hub for the right price
This is a good thread and timely for me too! I'm rethinking my wheel set up and am considering a 19/17 combo for street (I guess the "best" width is 2.5 front and 4.25 rear?) and then a 21 x 1.65 and an 18 x 2.5 for dirt, excels all around. Does this sound right? I too like the idea of having tires readily available on the road, for both sets of wheels. (I'm pretty aggressive on pavement, and am learning the capabilites of the 990 off-road, which means I'm aggressive some of the time! I'm looking forward to MORE! ) I'm learning how involved wheel selection is, sheeesh...
When you say custom spokes required, was it because of the stock spoke nipples not being able to pass thru the holes in the A60 rim ? or was there some other reason ?
I run the stock sizes w/Scorp's on the street and some easy hard pack dirt stuff, and I got me the Woody's wheels-1.60 front and 3.5 rear for the serious dirt stuff and I think they work just dandy. But I don't ride worth a shit. I ain't gots me no Mad Skillz. Chris
yeah right !! we know !! where's that pic of ocf rider doing a wheelie while leaving a 10ft long roost ?
If you want to go with a 2.5 rear by far the best option IMHO is to pick up a new DID SE rim and lace it to your stock hub. I threw on a set of SS Buchanan spokes and nipples since my nipples were starting to rust up. SE Rim from my dealer was $199 and spokes were $115 shipped. Another point, not only is this the best budget option but I think its the BEST option. The Super Enduro DID rim is not a typical gauge rim. Its HEAVY and STRONG! This is a far tougher and substantial rim than the Excel double labels I commonly replace annually on my Honda. Before I laced it up, I held both a 2.5 excel and the DID in my hands and theres a difference. Seems to me this rim was designed specifically for the pig, able to absorb more abuse that comes with the extra couple hundred pounds of sprung weight. Rather than using a lightweight rim designed for 450's and compensating with stiffer spokes as I've seen many here have done, the SE rim with stock 7 gauge spokes keeps the wheels ideal rim stiffness to support flexibility ratio mojo in check. The same can be said about the front rim too, I've done both ends.
I'm curious about this. KTM ADV wheels thus hubs are Italian pattern while Excel A60 rims only come Japanese patterned. The only possible way I could imagine this possible it to have different spoke sets for either side, possibly X2 on one side and X3 on the other. I had thought the only way to go Excel on the front required using an undimpled custom drilled rim. I'd love to see a pic of it. That said, I'd still wager a SE rim is tougher than an A60... Damn thing is a Hoss, not at all manufactured with an eye towards saving weight.
I'd really like to explore this option. Financially, you serve a very strong point in the ability to re-use the stock spokes and nipples and hub. That's a ~$200 investment for a vast improvement in tire choices and flexibility. I'd love to be the guinea pig for you all. I've never laced a rim but I've got a small workspace and a decent camera. Does anyone have a 2.5" dirtstar from an SE they want to sell me? used is ok!
Here's me building mine, copying CJRacer's already built one. After 1000kms of serious rock pounding. I really like the feel of the 1.6 width. Feels a lot more nimble and precise to me. KTM wanted $370cdn for a replacement rim. I got the A60 for half that. Doubt it's weaker I think we're off topic though, this is a rear rim thread.
