    I've been reading these threads for about 6 months and am memorized by the scenery. Last Feb I was in the area and thought
    "got to come back on a motorcycle"; 2 weeks ago I did a 7 day trip around the eastern edge of Arizona down to the Mexico
    border on a motorcycle and thought "got to come back".

    So last week I decided "i'm going back"; I'm leaving NJ on Jan 15th loading up the trusty WR250 heading out to Big Bend for
    6 weeks. I've downloaded all the appropriate tracks and hope to ride the state park and the national park roads. Plan is to
    maybe ride along the Mexico border to Laredo and beyond.

    I'm stoked - let the adventure begin.

    We are headed to Rancho Topanga Jan 20th to camp and ride for 5 days

    I probably won't arrive till the 24th (at least that is the plan); I'll be pulling my 20ft toy hauler
    any suggestions where is a good place to camp?
    Looking for a place which is accessible with a 2WD van pulling a camper;
    Electricity not necessary
    Showers not necessary
    Not looking to be remote as it gets a bit spooky by myself - so being around other campers would be
    nice;

    A few friends may join me in Feb for a few days; Anybody else riding in the area?

    We are staying in a 16' enclosed trailer, water at site and clean bath houses. They don't offer full hook up sites and since you aren't looking for that it should work. Great location and friendly host. Give them a call to discuss options. 432/371-2131

    I told a story in this report about a raid on the Brite Ranch. I just came across this article about what the Brite Ranch is doing for security these days after so much smuggling across their land. Ground surveillance radar, cameras, etc . . .

    I suspect that some others in the area are doing the same.

    The Brite Ranch includes some of the dirt river road along the Rio Grande.

    When my wife and i were riding along the River Road, I was wondering how safe we'd be. I know the Border Patrol rides along there, but we didn't see anyone. Smugglers could put a 990 to good use, but I doubt many would be able to handle one in the loose stuff.:lol3 Having a ranch along the border could get very dangerous.

    Is that green track along the River, what I’m assuming y’all are calling the river road, a public road or did you get permission to ride it? I’m planning a west Texas trip in April and know how Texas ranchers can be.

    It is listed as a public road on the official county highway maps (TX DOT wedsite).

    Some references to the road (Chispa-Candelaria):

    Here's a video I made of riding thru the area you guys are talking about---------it was my first time thru there. 2nd time it was really rutted up.
    Hope you enjoy it.
    I can't pin point exactly why it has been one of my favorite days on a motorcycle.
    Probably the excitement of riding it alone------the beautiful terrain and views.
    And riding along the border can make a lot of people nervous--------not me so much.
