Ok yeah nah, I hadn't seen that full route- looks good. There a few other options in that rodney/Kapipara area that keep you on the gravel a bit longer (Kaipara Hills Rd over Mt Auckland)..there is an option to go back up East along west Coast Road and down Ahuroa Road which takes you to the Puhoi Pub which is a nice spot for a beverage :photog, then on south/north via Krippner Road out to Waitoki/Riverhead and after that your route via Scenic drive os spot on- so I have nothing to add. I'll shut up now...

One of the many good things to come from this little exercise is that when you discover a road in a new area, you sometimes find a truckload of other roads you didn't realise were there, ripe for exploration. The Kaipara and Northern Wairoa area is one of those. Lots of gravel and great views, but all of it within 30 mins or so of a bacon sandwich. That's my kind of adventure.

OK team, we are back on the job. And we have made it to the mainland!!!!

I have a question for you locals.... In the Matakitaki Valley leading to and from Maruia Saddle, there are roads on either side of the river...... Matakitaki Road and Matakitaki West Bank Road. Which is more fun?????

    Going by Gmaps there?
Matakitaki West Bank Road is a dead end. No hook-ups.

Oops, thanks. 10 seconds looking at the photos would have told me that. Sorry, as you were!

I've been through there on a 4wd trip years back, I think there's a paper road but the track is not on the road line in places so farmer permission required. The river crossing could be challenging on a motorbike.

    Cheers

Thanks all. The T2B route is intended to be one that anyone (including a tourist on a rental bike) can ride without going over private land. We are in the process of putting it together and the end result will be downloadable gpx files as for the north island. We have a rough route planned. There's not going to be anything that you lot don't know about already, it's simply an attempt to join up some of the better dots on the way from north to south.

As soon as there's something worth critiquing I'll post it here and of course on the ADVNZ website, which is where it will reside. In the meantime if anyone has a favourite piece of back road they think should be included, I'd be happy to hear about it.

For us NZers, there will usually be a return trip so lots of opportunity to pick up things missed on the way down.

Alt. via Ohakune and a bit east, turn right and follow gravel ( it was in 1981) following Whangaehu Valley Rd/Turakina Valley towards SH3 or Hunterville.

    Thanks Dave
I rode the bit between Nation Park and Whanganui on my way to the SI last month and it goes through Raetihi and the down tbe Whanganui River Road. It is a good ride with some good scenery and history but its all sealed except for roadworks. I must admit i think theres room for improvement between NPark and Palmy before we head over to the east side.

As ever very happy to have people's suggestions.
    Cheers

A good question. Not for a while for me, as not enough free days to do it justice at the moment, plus its a bit cold and damp outside. Call me a wuss but I'll leave it until the weathers better:)
