Last minute, but any riders around Guate/Antigua/Xela looking to ride this week? Thinking about heading up to the Cuchumatanes, leaving from Antigua tomorrow or Wednesday.

    Hola amigos,
Wanted to reach out to the Guatemalan community and ask for some assistance. Crashed my bike last week and am trying to get some parts sent down here. I am in La Laguna San Pedro for another week and then heading south to Argentina. I was hoping to meet and ride with some inmates here in Guatemala and wanted to ask if anyone would be willing to receive a package for me sometime within the next two weeks? I don't think one week is enough time to ship a box from Florida to here. Or if you know of a good way to go about this please let me know. Thank you for the help.

    Sorry about the crash .
It usually takes 48 h to get stuff shipped from Miami to Guatemala . You're welcome to use my address and forwarder . Just PM me if you are interested.

Also , most BMW parts can be found at the dealer in GC at the same price as in the US.

BTW : It's San Pedro la Laguna , not the other way round ;-)

Thanks! I've heard it said the wrong way so many times it's difficult to know what the correct name is. Spoke with Jose at mototours/camp yesterday and will be sending the parts to the hostel. We will see just how long it takes to arrive. Might be in Antigua for a week or so.

Hello Guatemala! I'm about to cross the border at La Mesilla, probably tomorrow, then heading east towards El Salv or Hond. Any inmates interested in taking a ride and showing me the good stuff while I'm in town?

Good luck with the KLR. Hopefully the shop gets the problems diagnosed. We are still at motocamp so if you're in town tonight let's grab dinner or drinks.
    Cheers

Tomorrow , Wednesday , there will be a general strike in Guatemala . Demonstrations and roadblocks are most likely to happen all over the country during the day .
Usually in the early afternoon (when the rain starts) , everything returns to normal .

I've been reading a lot about mountain biking in Guatemala, Is there anything preventing from riding motorcycles on these trails?

ROBBERY ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF LAKE ATITLAN !

A few days ago 2 Canadian riders have been robbed at gun point between San Pedro La Laguna and Santiago Atitlan .

I'm not saying don't ride there at all (I still do) , but I just thought that riders should know so they can take the necessary precautions .

How many years has that little 'enterprise' been operating near Santiago?

Can riders still get police to provide safe passage through there?

I first rode to Guatemala in 2003, and I was warned about that stretch of road then. No idea how long before that.

I remember robberies on that stretch back in 1980 ; a few years back somebody got fed up and a few robbers were found dead right on their "workplace" . Things remained quiet for some time but then it started again . It's about time that somebody gets fed up again !

And yes , police escort is still available FREE of charge . Just let the police know when you leave San Pedro or Santiago that you are heading that way and they will have a police car waiting for you to escort you on the very few unpaved KM (That's where it happens)

My fiancee and I will be in Guatemala in the middle of January. We are in Colima as of now, all the way from Chicago on our KTM 1190 traveling the world for 3 (or more) years.
Looking forward to seeing all Guatemala has to offer.

Have you been to Tikal lately or do you know about the safety of the roads leading there. We are interested in coming down into Guatemala from Belize, would you recommend that route (CA13)? We may potentially end up in Panajachel, so either we will ride south from Cancun through Belize City, Belmopan, and end up on CA13, or we will head west and enter Guatemala on the western boarder as shown below.. Thoughts?

There is one more route that you might look into : Palenque-Tenosique-Coban-Sacapulas-Panajachel
All 3 routes are safe to ride .
