Very nice. Thanks for posting.
No byways.... I would not go there at the moment.....sad..but I don't want appear in CNN in an orange jump suit pleading for my life.
I am living in Asia for a long time...also a lot to explore here...and safer at the moment...I am a wimp
This trip is exactly the reason I dreamed about getting an airhead as a kid
Need to enjoy the photos on a larger screen!
A real shame that those days of "carefree" Sahara exploring are over. From what I read recently Tamanrasset now has a large transient population of black Africans on their way up to Europe, the desert roads are often used for 4x4 drug running up to the Mediterranean, along with a heathy dose of random fundamentalist nut-bars.
Bad news all round - but does make this thread more poetic, as a window onto a lost time
Enjoyed the old pics and travel story. Even here in the US, travel on a motorcycle in the Western States was so different in '82 than now. Thanks for the time and work to share this with us.
What was the "adventure trip" for you in the USA ? Like for us European, going to Northern Africa was quite simple...to France or Italy on the ferry..and 26 h later we were there. How was it in USA ??? Mexico ???
Or..probably you will find more everything one can possibly think of in USA ?!
Killer photos Krummemusic
A buddy and I took two months in the mid-70's riding the western US.
Unfortunately we were too cool to bring a camera along.
Great pics and report, beamed me back in time to when I started biking round Europe in '80. Times were different, people were different..... I was partially different - enjoying my bikes will never change! Thanks for making me getting in the cellar checking old boxes for old photos....
happy to hear that Joso...that was the idea of my blog...
Tomorrow my story will come to an end...
Hope by then all of you have digged in the cellar and post photos me_1980/me_2014
Would be fun
Yes it is.
I love threads like this that take you back to a age where things seemed simpler, less complicated.
Please don't stop the momentum - you guys that were fortunate to travel thru exotic locations during these times & earlier please contribute for the sake of us that got into the game later.
Superb. Proper 80's adventure and great 'gooseflesh' pics.
Thank You for sharing!
Great posting...just the reason I love ADV!
We were about to reach the Assekrem...
We were proud, happy...even we took the easy way down to Tamanrasset and up to the Assekrem. Plenty of other drivers used the road coming from Djanet..but that doesn't matters. Adventure Travelling is not a competition....its about making dreams come true and see the world we are privileged for a limited time to be a part of.
But now..it was no more a dream....it was for real
If I remember correctly - one could not drive all the way to the summit and to Father Foucaults hermitage.
The last couple of hundred meter had to be climbed up a small track So we put up tent and walked.... to get blasted away by what we were about to see.
And wait for the sunset
And as it did the past Million years...the sun went down on Assekrem
I hope you enjoyed the blog ! Thanks for following.
Very cool stuff.
Hope to see some more!
