Hi, I'm leaving the SF Bay area in a couple weeks heading south and turning around in Guatemala/Belize. I am planning a general route now and would appreciate input on places not to miss, preferably off the beaten track. Am heading thru the northern highlands thru Real de Catorce and then thru San Miguel de Allende. Am very familiar with the Yucatan and Baja but not the rest of Mx. Will be saving Copper Canyon/Devils Spine for a future trip. Any recommendations appreciated. Thanks!
After San Miguel, nearby Guanajuato is very nice and then south to Morelia. The small town of Patzquaro is great and then you should ride back through Morelia, through Las Cumbres where the Monarch butterflies winter to Valle de Bravo. V de B is actually a lot like Lake Tahoe and has spectacular year-round weather. From there it is a short ride to Taxco, Mexico's most beautiful colonial town. One the way home, try Las Huastecas, the mountains NE of Mexico City past Pachuca. Some all time mountain roads: Hwys 85, 105 and 120. Great riding all over the place! Enjoy!
