Another great ride report to keep us all addicted to advrider. Your humility and candor are intoxicating. Riding a GS through this trip is very impressive. The excursion alone is quite an amazing adventure let alone the work of writing a book for us to follow along.

    Thanks for sharing!

Amazing RR with outstanding pictures! Very dry humour throughout - very well written.

Africa always brings back great memories - was in Nigeria as a kid from '81 to '88. Guess we cannot set foot in those areas for some time to come.

It is sad to know that Aleppo and Palmyra are now in ruins from these new wars.........they had survived many wars, but now much more destroyed.
    Great pictures!

Thank you all for nice comments!

@bunicrides: the current situation in Middle East is really tragic. I found Syria the most vibrant and lively muslim country (and I've been to quite a few of them - Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, Egypt and Sudan) - really liked the people a lot. And Aleppo was my favourite place.

As GB said, it is very discouraging how much the world detriorated in just 10 years. Nowadays this trip would not be possible. Even putting Syria war aside, you cannot get nowadays to Europe from Cape Town overland on the east coast, unless you fly yourself and bike out. For some reason travellers are not allowed to Jordan on a bike anymore, and there is no way to get from Egypt to Europe. There are no ferrys from Egypt to Europe and they will not allow you on a bike to Sinai as some suicide bombers used bikes against army - so you cannot get to Israel to catch boat from there.

Sadly enough the only way up nowadays is going west coast, or crossing DRC, which was at the time of this trip considered much more hard core than the east coast.

I stumbled upon a link somewhere of this RR and it's mindblowing. It kept me company for quite a few days. Thanks a lot and can't wait for the rest. I'm off to read the rest of your stuff.

    Cheers
