Less gears means less shifting :D

Having just 5 gears instead of 6 means that the available space in the engine is bigger so the gears can be wider resulting in spreading the load on them better which should make them stronger and longer lasting. (in theory at least)

BMW for instance have had 5 gears on their single cilinder Rotax engines and they are pretty much bomb proof.

It should would be nice to have a modern equivalent of the 640ADV, but maybe without the vibes ;)

I ended up building my own out of a 690 and HDB rally lite kit, but the 6-speed is so narrow I'd almost prefer the 640's 5-speed.

I think gap between gears it is less of an issue on torque monster big bores that can easily pull hard across the range than it is on the smaller bikes. I don't really care one way or another but I've owned four bikes with semi-close or close range 6-speeds. On small trail bikes it makes sense, right gear for every situation and all. On the big bikes that can put down major power at low RPM it makes less sense.

Yeah, you know, if I were either CCM or AJP, I would be very worried by the fact that if I start to succeed and make any money, KTM will just say, "ok, fine, fine, here's your 690 Adventure, you whiners," which KTM could develop in their sleep if they feel like it.

no not the RR bike,,,, way back in the early pages of the 690 ('06-'07?) when it was first coming out, there are pics of testing what we all thought at the time was going to be the 640a replacement, i'll see if i can find it.

The 660 motor in the MZ line used the 5 valve head, I'm not sure if the bottom end is the same. The XT660 uses the 4 valve head IRC.

I thought the motor was the same one in the Aprilia enduro. A yamaha design that was licensed to minarelli to produce. Five valves, 660cc.

as a replacement for my 610. Only wish it had a six speed over a 5. Looks bullet proof, way tougher than a KTM. Gotta have the plate though, can't ride anywhere without it in Cali.
