@Ozarks Rider I envy you a bit. I went in 2004, the summer before my 50th birthday. I went again in 2014, the summer before my 60th birthday. I would go again in a heartbeat. Hopefully I'll get the chance again.
Until then I'm following you. :thumb

Great idea to take a cot, so much more comfortable than sleeping on the ground.

Thanks to everyone for weighing in and offering encouragement as well as helpful ideas! I have benefitted already from reading ride reports of others in Alaska and other places. Hopefully I’ll cross paths with other inmates out there and I look forward to hearing about your adventures as much or more than relating my own. And I hope I can do justice to this forum by offering up my slice of this.

Apparently I have two accounts. Not intentionally. One is from Tapatalk and the other is from my laptop. I’d gladly merge the two or even delete one and start over if anyone knows how to do this.

Not sure yet. Not on the way up, and it doesn’t look feasible on the way down. So probably not.

it is a great piece of road that winds you up if heading south, in watson lake.

i was going to send you a link to accommodations along the way that turned out to be a surprise highlight of the trip!

May just have to go with this for the time being. Anyway, got up at the break of 9am today and slept pretty well all things considered. Wasn’t in a rush to leave because I’m not a stranger to the road trip and I am not getting away from something as much as I am going to something. Won’t see my wife for three weeks and the livestock for two months so I languished before I figured I had better get going. I only had 400 miles to cover (when I was a truck driver that’s called a half day’s work) but it was toasty. Never dropped below 90 and got up to 102 in Kansas City. Had a nice Airbnb lined up for $30 with some very nice people who have a beautiful home. Got in around 8pm after stopping for dinner. Trying to get gear organized. Started off in good shape but then became a cluster in the end. Might jettison some of it despite trying to be really frugal on what I thought I needed based on previous trips. In Lincoln, NE for the night. Headed for Badlands tomorrow and begin putting up the tent.

I really appreciate that! I have everything on a pretty regimented schedule going up and I am going to try to get to the coast on the way down so I’m probably not going to be in position to do that. But I do sincerely appreciate it all the same Sir!

Blast off this afternoon with the family. Not much reason to post a bunch of pictures of cornfields and such but I did find this bench made from an old pickup tailgate.

Hello fellow followers! This is Dave's wife - he has been out of cell range for most of the beginning of his trip and so far everything has been going fine. He is in Glacier National Park presently and will update us as soon as he gets a chance. I am anxious to hear about his trip too!
