I didn't find any of those short gravel sections to be the slightest bother (except maybe one or two on corners.) It annoyed me the speed limit dropped so much.

I wasn't a good ambassador on that front, I spent every minute (except when near a town) north of Stewart going what ever speed I wanted, like there was no limit. Sometimes that meant Harley pace, but more often that meant squid pace. Unexpected gravel at squid pace can be puckering.

Ferry question: wasn’t planning on it, but my riding partner is struggling a bit so we are considering a ferry from the anchorage area on the way home. Does anyone know if one runs from the anchorage areato prince Rupert? I can do more research when I get there but figured I’d toss it up here and see if anyone has thoughts. Thanks!!

I did a ferry into Haynes. Highly recommend Haynes. Great paved road going in, great little town when you get there. Unreal scenery.

The cross gulf ferry would leave from Whittier. I think the next sailing would be sept 6th.
If you can get to Haines you can get south to Prince Rupert from there.
the main number for the ferry is 800-642-0066 during business hours M-F. I would call the Haines terminal, they are open anytime a ferry is coming or going so they have odd hours 907-766-2111 If your buddy can make it, two days ride.

    More ferry info:
The ferry from Haines to Prince Rupert would run about $647 for a rider and bike on the direct ferry on Aug 29th.

Anyone that can share info about *recent* experience on that last 15 mile stretch into Tuk? Is it still impassable when wet? Other info on Dempster road conditions welcome too. (And yes, I know it changes day to day).

With the northern riding season drawing to a close, I found myself re-reading parts of this thread. Especially the parts involving the “road to Tuk”... ah the memories, here is to all the 2018 travelers, may future travels be as exciting and rewarding.

    Same to you!

I made a final loop around AK before storing the bike in Fairbanks for the winter. It was already cold riding in Sept and it's below freezing now. Now the planning starts for next season

I'm glad your bike has no "memory capacity". If it did it would say "you're not going to take me back on the Demster again are you?"
