When you clean you really clean.
I think if I was that obsessed I would just buy a new bike.

Riding the divide trail this summer I travelled a two mile section with fresh calcium chloride. The truck driver flagged me down and cautioned me that it would be slippery and I should wash the bike as soon as possible.due to corrosion. I washed the bike that evening. Pretty thoroughly I thought.

When I changed my oil a week or so ago and removed the skid plate there was lots of the material bonded to the aluminum which was a bitch to remove and left some very nasty corrosion pits. So you can see, if the CC were to remain in a visible area with raw aluminum it could be a mess (airhead drivers beware:evil )

    In addition to the GS, there's a Honda CBR1000RR, a Triumph 955i Tiger (under the cover you're asking about), a Ducati Hypermotard 1100S, a Kawasaki ZZR1200, a BMW F650GS Dakar, a Honda CRF450X, a Honda CRF230F, and a Suzuki DR-Z125 (daughter's bike) in the garage. Sorry, no Harleys. :D

I think the photos provided by Bobloblaw (above) are ample justification for my cleaning obsession. YMMV.

Is June a good month to do a ride up to the bay and back? I am asking about weather and BUGZ.

Sure. xcept for the bugs and the weather. Actually, I think June is not as dry as July or April, but isn't bad compared to say August or September. We still had bugs in late AUg. To mis them in the spring I think May would be your better bet. Depends on you schedule. I wouldn't not go because of the bugs. Oh, and if you are allergic to bees, don't wear Hi-Viz. Seriously.

I would be cleaning my '07 GSA the same way.......actually, I wouldn't take it and destroy the bike/value/etc. I would take an older KLR650 like I did in 1999 to the Arctic Circle. Or a 2008 KLR650 to the ride the Trans Labrador Highway last year.............it still killed me to see how much damage those two roads can inflict on bikes that were clean before the trips.

    YMMV

This bike, to the surprise of many, has been to PB and Inuvik, and all points in between.

95% of all the CC "evidents" came off with "Blue Job" chrome cleaner, I got mine at the HD dealer.

Can't tell it was ever up there. (this is a post trip picture. About an hour of cleaning) Gotta love Simple Green, Pledge, and Blue Job!

Too funny. I haven't actually laughed out load in my office for a while. Thanks, it feels good.

I suggest that the best way for you to keep the gs value is that you don't buy it in the first place. They lose about 20% just driving it off the lot. :lol3 As an added bonus you won't have to stress about the fact that driving it in the rain might be lowering the resale value. :rofl

I really like the reference to a clean bike being "damaged" by dirt. That put me over the top. Thanks again. MMDV

I feel so beat down that I might not even ride my GSA on a dusty road in the future, let alone the RAIN! Rest assured that I have ridden many, many miles on shitty, muddy, rainy roads and I realize that there are two types of GSers.......clean bike and the "I never wash my GS bike"

Now, off to the garage to wax the GSA and my prized KLR.

May and June, historically, have the least precipitation. The summer gets progressively wetter.

I have ridden there twice, in the second half of May and the first week of June, but you must be prepared for any weather, including a blizzard. It has been 60 degrees in Prudhoe Bay the day after the Haul Road was frozen mud. Take your time, stop or turn around if you need to.

Bugs will be heavy starting in May, and won't give anyone a break until September.

Hey, when you and I are on the road to Prudhoe (at the end of next June) you promised I could stop and clean my bike........while you keep refilling.:D

I would never take this trip in May. Its still snowing where I live in May (and June for that matter). It can only get colder the farther you go north.

The distances are approximate as I did town - town days to get an idea of pace. In reality I will ride until I get bored / tired or roadrash each day and likely camp most of the way.

Let me know how your planning goes and if you want to think about meeting up at some point along the way give me a call or drop me a pm!

I enclosed a pic from this years trip so you can get an idea of what type of lunatic you might be getting involved with!

We may be on the haul road at the same time you are. We are leaving south Saskatchewan around the 19th or 20th then heading north to Edmonton, White Horse and Fairbanks via Dawson City.
We are located directly north of you in Saskatchewan.
