Full stop! Amazing what a change of government can do. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmo...osal-cancelled-environment-minister-1.5126389
It doesn't appear to be a step forward... yet. I was kind of looking forward to a nice campground development. Maybe things will still progress, albeit more slowly, and with a better consultation process.
Thanks UCP for fixing the garbage proposals on Bighorn. Now hopefully they will back out the ridiculous shutdowns of Livingstone and Porkies from last year. Too late for Castle probably, even though the shutdowns are based on non-existent data and don't make sense. Those who think this is a only a "camping" issue are sorely mistaken, it has been an out and out war on the OHV community over the past four years and hopefully it's at an end.
I've been following these plans to de-list and offload AB Provincial Park management to municipalities, etc. This is utterly ludicrous, particularly given the situation with Banff, Jasper, Waterton & Kananaskis being full up/hard to get in to, throughout much of the peak months. Instead of investing in more parks & campgrounds, they intend to de-list!? Seems like the Bighorn Parks proposal doesn't stand a chance. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/alberta-parks-closure-1.5486513
All to save five million dollars. They spend thirty million a year on a twitter account, er I mean "war room". Unreal
It's what Government does best, doesn't matter which colour their shorts are, Committee, study, propagandize, study more, lobby, form another committee and then when it comes to actual boots on the ground to do something, Oh surprise there is no budget for this. Let's form a committee to study why!!!!!
Somehow they decided the only purpose of parks is to make money. Good thing nobody told them about the pay parking in Ontario day use areas.
Here in MB they budgeted $25 million for park upgrades last year, replaced 1950's era bathroom/showers etc. I can appreciate Alberta's financial situation, but when it comes to parks development & conservation, gotta think long term. And do they have to be profitable, pay their own way? Parks are a money losing proposition here too, but it's a service provided... for everyone.
I suspect that once they've closed or privatized parts of our parks, we'll never get them back. Camping is getting more expensive but it's still almost half what Ontario charges.
Has anyone ever considered paying public servants as a subsidy to a weak economy? There aren't many teachers or nurses hiding their pay in offshore accounts or buying palaces in the Okanagan.
The UCP are Corporate Socialists. Some reverse Robin Hood sh!t going on in Alberta. Parks belong to the people. Its one of the few things I thought the left and right agreed on.
