A few miles down the trail we head up to the top of the Cinder Cone.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />

Some of the guys seemed to have a little trouble here although it was not technical at all. Guessing they might have been concerned with me standing there with the camera…that I was trying to catch a good crash in a tricky spot.

We clean up our act and continue south through East Fort Rock. Lots of switchy, up and down trails…kind of like the off road moto version of a Disneyland ride. Not too many pics through this (athletic) portion of the ride but the trails were recently groomed very nicely.

Considering that this was Maddog Mike's last hurrah in the serious dirt and you were taking NooB Heath into Fandango, I'm a little surprised you didn't just arrange to have Life Flight as your chase vehicle. :hmmmmm

Chit chatted with this group of 6 guys. They were here on their annual “boy’s trip”. They’ve all known each other for over 60 years. Entertaining listening to them rib each other about some girl back in the 50s…just like it was yesterday!

Original plan was to head up into the Fremont but with the late winter/spring the locals said there was no way through yet so we opt for a playa ride on the east side of Summer Lake.

Here comes Eric on a 450.

Quick recap of the story with his 950. Shortly after we left Hole in the Ground I received a radio call that Eric’s bike stalled and wouldn’t start. Dave and Eric proceeded to tear the bike down and isolated the problem in the fuel pump. Oddly enough, Eric had just replaced the stock electric fuel pump (which are known to have problems) with an after market vacuum pump. The chase truck was relatively close and swung back to pick him up.

Fortunately we had a spare bike for Eric to finish the trip.

We drop down into this sandy wash (I literally dropped straight down into it) where it’s a little looser than some of us expected.

Story about Mike. About ten years ago I started to get the itch to ride again. Hadn’t ridden off road since I was a teenager. Mike was a co worker and we would have lengthy conversations about riding as a kid and how much fun it would be do it again. We both eventually got bikes and were drawn to distance dual sport/adventure riding in Central and Eastern Oregon. Many years, off-road miles, adventures and stories later, Mike is forced to hang up his off-road riding boots as he is scheduled for hip replacement surgery this year. This was Mike’s last off-road trip and the end of an era that we started together. The entire trip was sort of bitter sweet as I rode areas we had ridden years before and remembered so many good times. You’ll be missed out there buddy!

Continuing up the playa you can really get the speed up but have to be careful for these. The result of late spring run off. They can reach out and remind you to slow down!

The electrical turned out to be the three rides old blue paper weight I had in the battery box. :deal After three days getting to know the kick starter real well, I'll gladly pay the extra for a good battery. Maybe all the kicking is what made me hungry?
