That tent site was waaay too close to the edge for my taste.

Yes, I am a puss when it comes to heights.

Very nice report! Its good to know there are still places where you can be totally alone in one of the most traveled tourist spots.

You have me fighting to keep my ass at my desk, and NOT run straight to the dealer to buy an Adventure touring bike.

    Day 2

The sun rose in the morning, so I did as well.

I was hoping to sneak back across the Indian Reservation without waking anyone up.
I ran through all sorts of scenarios wondering how to handle any confrontation.

Not to worry. No one appeared to be present at the toll gate, so I ripped through the driveway (almost crashing on the exit) and thundered towards the border.

For several reasons, I decided to go counter-clockwise around the GC this time.
I need to get to Cameron this afternoon for a permit, so I take the most direct route through the park on the South Rim Drive.

I line up with some of the millions that visit the Grand Canyon each year. Havasupai Point is only 35 miles from here.
Only 14 miles of the roads can be considered rough. Knowledge is power - or in this case, solitude.

    I stopped a a few viewpoints.

I also took the time to visit the small set of Indian ruins just off the South Rim Drive. I had never bothered to stop for these before.

    [IMG] ............[IMG]

My favorite view from the South Rim Drive is Lipan Point.

I race down the hill out of the park passing the Little Colorado River Canyon...

    and jewelry stores.

I found the permit office for the Navajo Nation southwest of the roundabout for highways 64 and 89.
I purchased a backcountry permit for overnight camping at Tatahatso Point. I think it cost me $12. (or $18, not sure)
The nice lady said the office will be closed on weekends for the winter starting in November. Apparently, you can get permits in advance by mail.

I was still at the counter inside the permit office, when I hear from behind me, "Dave"?
It was @mntdawg! For a second I felt famous for being recognized, but he actually recognized my bike. :lol3

mntdawg was out riding the AZBDR and wrote a report here. He was considering also riding out to Tatahatso.
    Nice meeting you, Dave!:wave

I was happy to have permission to explore the Navajo Nation. :super

    Thanks Fred!

    Hi buddy!:wave

    Thank you, @OnTheWay!

Then you wouldn't like the next campsite. I'm no daredevil when it comes to heights either, though I have jumped from perfectly good airplanes, and rappelled from helicopters.

I for one have never missed work reading RRs (I think some of my bosses may read this:ksteve).

Hi @NMTrailboss. Did you ever get to ride any of this in the past couple years? I remember you really wanted to.

Shhhhhhh! Don't let anyone else know. :hmmmmm

And yet I'm not sponsored by anyone. Thanks for following along @Zubb !

Nope, not yet. Did a ton of riding in the past couple years...CA, CO, NM, NV, Baja and quite a bit in central AZ, but haven't explored the north side of the Grand Canyon yet...still on the 'to do' list though! Until then, I will just follow along on your journey and experience it through your lens(es)!! :thumb

I ride north on the highway for awhile.

I've seen this road many times, so I get bored.

At Cedar Ridge I turn off onto the I.R. 6110.

It's a fun and fast road.

I planned to make myself a GPS track to follow out here, because I've read the multiple tracks can be confusing.
The dates for this trip snuck up on me, and I never got any tracks loaded.

This big flat-topped mesa is named the Shinumo Altar. It makes a great landmark that I refer
to over the next 3 days. I'll try to remind you to look for it when it appears in a photo.

If you assume the 6110 remains the main route out here, you will end up going too far and have to backtrack a little - like I did.

There is a maze of 2-tracks out here, and no more signs. They are mostly easy with frequent rough spots.

    [IMG] ..........[IMG]

    Freedom!

The Kaibab Plateau is up ahead and I'm itching to get back up there.

    360 degree Panorama
There's nothing out here, except for the Shinumo Altar and... Is that water ahead?

The 6110 heads straight down into the lake...

    ...and out the other side.

I go off the trail and ride to the top of a hill to the right. As I head down the other side I stop at this boulder field to see if a route exists.
I actually saw fresh knobby tracks on this hill. It looked like 2 other bikers were here recently trying the same thing as me.

There appears to be a trail across the dam, but there are big drop offs to reach it. It's not ride-able and the walls of the wash steepen beyond the dam.
I backtrack a short distance, but didn't want to go all the way back to trails. I left the trail again and set out to find a route around the left side of the lake.

This is what the Black Spot Reservoir and my tracks look like from the satellite. Obviously in drier times.

I made it across and worked my way through several other trails until getting back on the 6110.

This is a typical intersection out here. I see fresh moto tracks.

On and on the sage goes.

I found the spot with the view I was looking for and set up camp....

NMT, I think you may like some of this year's tracks even better. And don't feel bad, it took me 2 years to get back.

Hi Paul! Thanks for coming along.
It would be great if you are coming through Phoenix! I would love to see you again before your next RTW.
I want to try photographing you two. Let me know if you need anything when coming through.
I actually improved the route some for the area you rode. :evil

Hi Dave, glad to see you had a great ride and made it home safe. Your photos are spectacular, wish I could take photos like that. My buddy (wirepuller) and I ran into you at Marble Canyon gas station. We were riding the AZBDR. Those tracks you saw trying to get around the lake were ours. Can't wait to read the the rest of your report and see your photo's.
