Interesting reading from Stuff News NZ.

"Team New Zealand and Oracle Team USA left fans on the edge of their seats during this high stakes game of chicken in the third race of the America's Cup in Bermuda.

As the two sides came through the fifth gate, Team New Zealand with a healthy lead, Oracle's Jimmy Spithill sailed straight at the Kiwi boat.

Peter Burling avoided disaster with a clever gybe to see his side get out of trouble, before Oracle protested.

The race officials deemed the Kiwis within their rights to sail the way they did, as Team New Zealand romped to a 49-second victory.

Team NZ now lead the series 2-0 needing to win five more races to claim the Auld Mug, Oracle on the other hand require seven wins to retain sport's oldest trophy."

Probably so. They don't seem to use it much, though, for whatever reason.

    Yeah nah.
They loose a point for THAT race.
    No other penalty at all.
Courts have nothing to do with it - see the latest rule change.

Then 24 hrs later its on again.
The Yanks pop on the spare bows on their spare boat.
The Kiwis have 24hrs to fix their allowed one and only.

If it occurs, any collision at all, despite what anybody claims, and the Kiwi's are unable to continue you can bet your family jewels it will be hard to find any challengers at all next time given that more than 1/2 the sailing community has already walked away from it in disgust.
It could come down to Spithill's level of integrity or how many $ Larry offers him to change his mind.

    Himm....
Not his hand on the tiller.
A couple of lazy super dollars from somebody who has enough readies where it really makes no difference....well....
And he is an Ausi and a Ginga :-) ... remember the underarm and other examples of whatever it takes, there is historical M.O.
I guess its wait and see. I'm not convinced it out of the question and completely off the table and a no go area.

Ye ha. Who said a little ole sail boat race was boring.

My feeling on this is its a sort of a multi strand helix. The strands include, and not limited to:

    What with Larry's deep pockets.

Balanced against the somewhat talented little bloke on the blocks ability to scrape together some cash to even front up over there and have a go, let alone foot it with the big boys and really have the slimmest of chances of actually winning this boat race. Dave and Goliath so to speak.

The skulduggery of almost impossible ever changing set of rules constantly changing to cover possible eventualities to give the defender every possible chance of being successful no matter how unfair or scurrilous.

That a lot of sail boat syndicates have walked its so badly kilted.

The real bad feeling of being basically ripped off from the last set of races, and a determined resolve to put that right.

Chuck in the ever present trans Tasman battle that is always lurking in the background.

But make no mistake its not a country against country boat race as what it was supposed to be back in the day.

It was quickly seen the Yanks didn't have the skills, the ability or the where withal to retain the cup, so modified it somewhat.

Don't agree. Well come outside and fight toe to toe on even ground.
Which wont happen as the whole world knows how long it would take for a team to be sat on their ass in the corner.

But at the end of the day - Yeah Nah - nothing special really - just a boat race after all isn't it? :-)

I have to say that I miss the 12 meter boats, but those winged cats are wicked fast and fun to watch.

All it takes is a change in wind and Oracle can come screaming back. They have done it before. I'll be staying tuned.
