I'm going to be in Vancouver, BC this summer on a ride and was looking at Highway 20 that goes from Williams Lake(on HWY97) west to Bella Coola. Has anybody ridden that road and then taken the ferry to the north end of Vancouver Island?

Awesome! A few questions, how long does it take to go from Vancouver to Bella Coola? Also, any info on how to find out about the ferry schedule from Bella Coola to Vancouver Island and how long is the ferry trip? What's the road conditions west of Williams Lake?

    1) How long does it take to go from Vancouver to Bella Coola? 630 miles We did it in a real easy 2 1/2 days.

    2) Ferry Info WWW.bcferries.com look under Discovery coast passage.

    3) How long is the Ferry trip? Well that depends what day you sail. 13-25 hr.

4)Road conditions Rt 20? All in all pretty good, some sections were pretty rough washboard they didn't last long.

We did this trip in the summer of "04" Great ride, you are going to love "the hill" The hill is just past Anahim Lake on Hyway 20. It is steep, 20% for 20 kms, or so they say.

When we were in Bella Coola, the ferry to Port Hardy took,

    Monday 13 hrs
    Wednesday 24 hours
Friday, longer, I believe it was like 30 hours

Here is a picture of a section of "the hill"

I lived in Williams Lake for over twenty years and have seen most of the backroads between "the Puddle" and Bella Coola.
The route west from Williams Lake is almost all pavement, just "the hill" and the bit through Tweedsmuir Park is still gravel. There are some great alternatives to get off the highway. Turn south at Lee's Corner and head down to Nemiah Valley, then north past Tsuniah Lake and on to the Tatlayko Valley and back to highway 20 at Tatla Lake - take a day and a half and really enjoy the Chilcotin Country instead of 2 hours to get to Tatla from Williams Lake. Or, pick up the River road just west of Alexis Creek and take that to Tatlayoko. Both are great routes.
Get a copy of Backroad Mapbooks - Chilcotin volume for detailed maps of all the roads. backroadmapbooks.com

Thanks for the info everyone! I checked on the ferry times and that's kinda throwing a wrench into my plans...:(: Not sure if I can make the timing work with the ferry but hopefully still ride part of the road. Didn't expect the ferry to only run one day a week to the island...

I did the trip last fall, but only rode to Bella Coola and back; no ferries. The Hill was in great condition, with some scattered construction on the east side of it. Beautiful ride there. I stayed the night at the Graham Inn in Tatla Lake - very nice people and good food.

You can read a bit about my trip here: http://www.dantesdame.com/05banff.htm

My Grandparents are from Bella Coola, and my uncle has acreage, 1/2 mile shore front, on Charlotte Lake. Big country man! The "Hill" is legendary, in the early days, as it was made by the locals, not the government.

The ferry {Queen of Chilliwack} does three runs a week to Van. Island in season, leaves Bella Coola mon 8 am, wed 7:30 am and fri 8 am. Some of the runs are direct to Port Hardy while others stop at villages along the way.

I am interested in doing the same trip this year. I live in Vancouver and ride a DL650. The first direct ferry from Bella Coola to Port Hardy is the first week in June!
