The kids and I had a super chill afternoon by the pool at our friend Richie’s house today.

I’ve spent many Saturday afternoon’s here but never before to swim. Richie’s pool is actually a purpose-built skateboard bowl.
    upload_2021-9-22_21-48-5.jpeg
The bowl has become a legendary, almost mythical skate spot that has been host to some of the rowdiest skateboard jams in New Mexico and many skateboarding legends and luminaries.

…much to the chagrin of Richie’s wife Carolyn and the chickens that live next to it…lol!

As a concession Richie made an agreement that every other summer it would become an actual swimming pool. Here is Richie enjoying the more therapeutic side of his masterpiece…

Oh wow, there’s some major talent in that one pic. Jaws is the most obvious in the photo, but also I spy Lizzie Armanto (such a badass). Is that Evan Smith in the grey long sleeve behind Jaws? It almost looks like Ed Templeton with that vintage looking camera, but it’s hard to tell. I’m guessing it’s not him, but it’d be awesome if it was!

You nailed the first two, Nick. Homoke autographed and gave that board he’s carrying to my oldest boy! Another Birdhouse skater from that day was David Loy who I recall attempting a frontside noseblunt slide on the deep-end coping probably 20 times and then Lizzie nailed it on the first try…lol. Ed Templeton did actually come skate the bowl with his Toy Machine crew a few years later. Also David Gravette along with some other Creature riders, and legends Tony Alva, Stacy Peralta and Ray Barbee have grinded their trucks there. It’s just one of those, ”Hey I heard about this siiick bowl in this guy’s backyard…” kinda places…lol. For the local crew, it’s always just been “Richie’s place”, where the old-school gathered for the weekend session. Many of us have aged and don’t skate as much anymore (Richie turned 60 this year!) I’m hoping a younger generation continues to convene there and carry the torch into the future. It’s all lost on Carolyn however and she’s always been handwringing about liability even though countless bones have been broken there (more than a few of my own) and not a single law suit to date.

That’s amazing. It wouldn’t have made sense for Ed T to be there with the crew in that photo, but I saw the vintage looking camera and thought MAYBE. As I know he’s a huge photographer these days. It must have been a wild time with the Creature crew there. There’s some heavy hitters when it comes to transition skating on that team. Not to mention the fact that they like to party. Stoked your son scored the Homoke board. He’s such a crazy dude. Always love seeing him skate. Nothing is too big or scary for him, he just throws himself at it, haha. Love the story about Lizzie. She’s incredible. The slam she took recently on a mega ramp would end the careers of most anyone, but not Lizzie. She’s an absolute beast.

I sat and chatted with Aaron for a bit that day. He struck me as surprisingly grounded and chill and expressed genuine interest in me and my kiddos. He was already thinking/planning about his future post-skating and had just bought a house in Phoenix (across from his parent's house...lol.). Most of the seasoned pro skaters I've met have this aspect to them...surprisingly/refreshingly normal and cool despite their bad-boy/wild-child image for partying, etc.. Alva is another (nowadays anyhow). He's amazingly still skating in his 60's and still sponsored by Vans! Of course there have been many who's flame burned bright and burned out too soon because of this never-ending party mentality and addiction, much of which was propagated by Jake Phelps (RIP) in Thrasher, IMO. I was just talking with actor Josh Brolin (if you can believe that) about a lot of the skate hero's of the 70's and 80's many of which he personally knows from growing up in CA. One of Josh's first films was Thrashin' which featured Hawk, Hosoi, Alva, Caballero. He mentioned the tragedy of his buddy Jeff Grosso's recent and untimely death.

Yea, the continued and outdated promotion of the skateboard badboy/party mentality is unfortunate. So many great humans have suffered from it. Too many names and brands have fallen to even list them at this point. Growing up skating in the early 2000s gave me a weird perspective on things. I kinda hated all the OG Thrasher/Vans/Indy/etc skaters. For me it was Alien Workshop, Toy Machine, éS, etc. I honestly just ignored as much of the party hard Cali vibes as I could. Just wasn't my thing. Hell, I didn't even see the point in transition skating. Street skating was all that mattered to me, and there wasn't a concrete pool anywhere near me in Pennsylvania. Now, at 36, all I want to do is lace up my Vans, put on The Misfits, and roll around in a pool, lol. I'm just now (honestly) learning about a lot of the old school skaters. I'm enjoying the history a lot more now. Just sad I missed out on seeing some of these people skate when they were in their prime... or just alive.

Oh, and one thing I will say about getting back into skating in this era... THE YOUTH IS AWESOME. Kids these days are so fucking nice. I'm an anxious mess at the skatepark. Self confidence at an all time low as I struggle to land ANYTHING. Meanwhile, 10yr olds are doing things I didn't even dream was possible at that age. Those same kids though are so positive and eager to give me props when I finally land something. Gives me hope. So glad the toxic masculinity and "bad boy" shit seems to be fading away in the younger generations.

But they tried! As a kid I'd have just looked at you weird while I turned <insert terrible nu metal band> up louder on my Shockwave discman, and skated away.

Little van excursion with kiddos up to CO to visit the elder sibling. Always an adventure…

Looks like an awesome trip! South central Colorado is gorgeous this time of year. I miss spending more time down there. The funny thing about owning an Airbnb in the area you love, is you never get to go there. Need to fix that.

Fantastic pics, the scenery, autumn colours and open space look enticing. Particularly liked the photo before last – obviously not much traffic around! Asparagus at this time of year? That’s weird…
