AR SLAP Trax

Does anyone know of a good Arkansas map to buy or download for Garmin gps?

the one that loads from my 390 is pretty decent but I often find I am riding on trails and what looks to be a road that is not on my map.

The Garmin CNNA map has all of the AR dirt roads on it. The 24k topo does as well and is routable but is sometimes harder to see because it has too much detail.
Buy the DVD so you can easily install the maps into Basecamp as well.

Now, knowing which roads you can actually ride and make it across all the creeks crossings is an entirely different skill that changes with the weather!

what would you suggest for an offroad/ back road track coming from Pryor Creek, OK when i cross into AR around Maysville to get to Mountain Home reasonably direct

from Mountain Home i head into MO to ride some of the TMOT eastbound starting around Summersville

I think this may work for you. Feel free to tweek it to your liking.

309 miles from Pryor OK to Mtn Home, via part of the AR TAT. In NWA, down thru Lincoln south to Mountainberg, east thru Shores Lake then north to Huntsville. East to Harrison and then on to Mountain Home via some dirt and hwy 412. Three fuel stops waypointed, Huntsville, Kingston, Harrison.

There are three legs each (routes and tracks) for this journey.

A 185 mile (+/-) Round trip from Fayetteville, Arkansas (Hiway 16 and Crossove)r to the Ozone Burger Barn. This is a round trip ride with a combination of gravel and tarmac. It is big bike friendly. The map was compiled in Garmin CNNA 2013.3 If your mapset is different you should retrace the map to avoid errors. It is also a route not a track.

My first attempt at BaseCamp

This is a combo hwy and dirt ROUTE from the west side of Fayetteville to Tahlequah (hwy 62 at the Illinois River just east of town).

Using city navigator 2010.1 & Base Camp

Dammit, I hate basecamp. My mapsource skills are great, but times change now I have to learn a new language.

Since hwy 23 is closed due to a landslide, here is a ROUTE for a 16 mile, dirt road go around.

Big bike friendly and AUTO friendly..keep in mind, it is not paved and there are rough spots so slow is how you go!

A few posts up I asked about GPS maps. I tried to download the free map suggested by TypeSH but it repeatedly said the files were corrupted and would not load. I was also not fond of the idea of buying a Garmin map like guavadude suggested because I was not sure what additional features it would have over my existing Garmin map. The map I have from the factory with lifetime updates is pretty decent. I was looking for something specific to Arkansas with a lot of detail. So I found a map from IHunt at huntinggpsmaps.com. It has amazing detail for Arkansas, it shows trails, every back road, back roads that are now closed and grown over, park boundaries/property lines with land owner names (that's cool), ATV trails, off road trails like Mill creek, TOPO, and all kinds of details specific to hunting like wildlife zones. The major drawback is that this map is not rout-able so I can't draw out a route on basecamp then convert it to a track and load it to the gps and that's a real bummer. But, so far as other details it is amazing. I can however hand draw out a track with my mouse over trails. I 'm not for sure if that is going to work out yet...I think I could draw out a track then ride it knowing it is going to be off a little and then save the track from my GPS data that I actually rode. I'll let you know when I give it a try. Loading the tracks I have ridden onto this map show a ton of detail. It was kind of pricy at $110.00 for the SD chip but I was tired of being back in the woods not having enough information on my gps. The map I bought is Arkansas only but they do have other states too.

I've seen that thread before and read it over. I posted this here because i was looking for and found soemthing Arkansas specific.

I suggested Laying Down Tracks because that is where you'll get your answers on where to get ideas on getting the free maps you want. This is the wrong forum for that.

oh whatever.. I was not looking for a free map but an AR specific map and guys that ride and use their GPS in AR probably would know or be great full for additional information. I'm not hijacking any thread rather trying to add useful, relevant information. throughout this thread you'll find a lot of the same with other questions and answers on things like basecamp and what not.

Are you looking for a TOPO map? If so, go to www.gpsfiledepot.com . They have Garmin compatible maps that may help you.

BigDeal, Charlie is a lovable, huggable character and really is trying to be helpful with his typical "MR. Asshole" flair.
Charlie, I think he is looking for that Holy Grail of awesome, detailed, ROUTABLE maps....for a Garmin. I really don't think they exist. You turned me onto Roads and Rec, and the TOPO maps from gpsfiledepot, and both are great, but not routable.
BigDeal, I've had luck drawing routes in my CN map, then displaying the route on Montana with only the TOPO map (or Roads and Rec) enabled, but you have to make sure auto-routing is off or the Montana will barf. The obvious problem during route-drawing, as you have found, comes when you try to route over a section that isn't on a CN map, at which point you have to turn on direct routing and hand-draw with your mouse as you suggest. PITA, but about all you have. Good, detailed routable maps AND an automatic avoidance routing system that would "Avoid Paved Roads" are my 2 wishes that will likely never come for the Garmin, IMO, unfortunately.

....oh yeah...and "Layin' Down Tracks" is a treasure trove of tricks and tips that has cost me hours and hours of fiddling when I should be working...but valuable time anyway.
