I think that I am a motorcyclist or a biker based on my wife's assessment of threat level for a given situation.

    For example:

If she is enjoying herself at a party, and converses with someone who mentions a motorcycle, she might reply: "Oh, my husband is a motorcyclist as well. I'm sure you would both get along."

If she is walking through the park and encounters someone who looks scary or makes a move toward her, she might say: "Hey A-hole, my husband is a biker. You better watch yourself."

I'm an enginebikist. I'll be a motorbikist when someone invents a good battery. ;-)

If she says, "Don't mess with me, my husband's a motorbiker." The guy will think - "What a nerd!" and walk away.

Yeah, I get that. I now have a hard time talking about the motor in my bike. I know it's become kind of acceptably interchangeable, but I tend to talk about the engine in my bike and the motors in the robots we use at school. Just kinda hard to relate to the way the terms work out. And so we go...

My high school shop teacher always admonished us with “If it runs on gas, it’s an engine. If it’s electric it’s a motor!”

I guess the potential assailant was trying to figure out if her husband is a Doctor, Dentist or a Lawyer? Just too confusing . . . oh look another Pokimon over there?

Glad to see this thread content is going the way of all good ADVrider threads... whatever direction or directions that may be. :scratch:snore:dunno:jack

I think my serious answer would be “I’m a commuter.” I just choose to do it on a motorcycle. California lane splits, motorcycles can use carpool lanes, and traffic is heavy.

I can get to my office in 18 minutes on a bike, or 45 minutes in a car. In downtown L.A. I can squeeze in where cars can’t and park anywhere.

Purists would say I destroyed a beautiful Bonneville by putting a Givi trunk on it. But, you can’t carry a laptop in a waxed canvas saddlebag.

Call me what you want to call me and I'll call you what I see.

I think of myself as a motorcyclist.

I can't think of a scenario where I would call myself either out loud.

Unless it's a pre-74 Triumph I don't think the purists have any good point there. Besides a trunk can always be taken off. I hate the look of a trunk, but I know the value it presents in actual practical use. Can't fault any rider for using them, except maybe a motocrosser or the like... :lol3

I hardly ever hear the term biker anymore.

It’s hard to refer to a bunch of well heeled old folks riding in the slow lane as “bikers”.

As an image it’s kind of lost it’s punch.
