Back in January of this year a good friend of mine down the street suggested an off roady type ride in Newfoundland. We had four people on board, Ferry booked.....Then, Covid came along. Ferry was cancelled, trip put on hold, but then an opportunity opened up with the opening of Newfoundland to Atlantic Canadians, so once again the trip is back in the works. The Ferry is booked for 26 July to head over to Port Aux Basque and ride the west coast, with a possible trip down to Burgeo if time permits. We only have three riders now, as one has decided not to travel at this time. We will be two DR650's, one of them stock, mine fairly well modded, and a KTM 1290 Adventure. Bikes still require a little prep and I'll get to that in the coming days.

I’ll be taking the 2013 DR 650 shown here. Engine is stock, exhaust has been replaced , air box cut open and carb rejetted. The fairing provides great wind protection, and the LED’s are far better than the crappy stock headlight

The front suspension has been replaced with Procycles DDR’s and spring kit. Rear has been fitted with a heavier spring. To keep things charged, I wired in a powered cell phone cradle and a dual USB charger at the rear to put in the Mosko Moto bags

This morning I decided to put new sneakers on before the heat came up. The rear track master ll came off

Through the magic of the interweb, the front MT 21 was replaced by a new MT 21, both tires were balanced with balancing beads. After the tires were done it was outside for a blast of water to clean up the bike and my luggage

Having been across the Gaffs a couple of times my suggestion would be to let weather be the deciding factor. A run through there in the fog/rain is a low viz look at alders.

I think that will be our mantra for the whole trip. I have Rattling Brook falls on the agenda, but hear it’s underwhelming if there is no rain. We are just riding day to day in a constant state of weather decided flexibility.

Did a trial loading today. Lots of stuff got packed, probably going to unpack and see if I can lighten the load a little.

Most of my touring is solo. Try it. You might like it, esp if you're introverted, but I guess if you were, you'd be looking to keep others off your ride:lol3:lol3

Not sure I’d advise going solo in backwoods Newfoundland, you’re a long way from help out there.

We caught the 1145 ferry over to Newfoundland on the 26th and got a room as we didn’t clear the ferry terminal until 2000 and it was plenty foggy. Next morning we had breakfast and headed out. First stop was up Tower road, it was foggy, but worth the trip

We headed up to Stephenville for lunch, then I called an old Airforce buddy up and we all headed up to Serpentine Lake. This place is simply stunning. Photos don’t do it justice. It is a 32km “road” in to this gem. Well worth the ride.

Was supposed to be leaving on the long ferry across, on Wed, coming from Maine with intentions of riding as much offroad across the rock as possible to the horizons meet. Keep the pics coming.

We are back home in Nova Scotia 6 days early. The KTM 1290 sliced the rear tire up pretty bad so we checked the entire west coast of Newfoundland for a replacement. Nothing was available so we decided the best course of action would be to nurse it back down the coast for 500 km to the ferry, then another 550km home. I’ll post some more pics from the ride shortly. We had a great 6 days of riding so not too disappointed. Another reason to come back to NL to finish our ride.
