If you happen to get to Chicago late at night it's hardly worth avoiding.

The Cracker Barrel at IL59 and I-88 is fine. Just give us a time to be there.

the closer this thing gets and the more I look at maps, the less I want to go through Chicago. So, put the breakfast/lunch plans on hold for a little while.

Living a bit north of the city I have to go through it to go south or east. I find taking a nap after work and leaving at ten or eleven p.m. saves me time and aggravation. Also as a bonus there is no need to avoid downtown and even living here my whole life down town is beautiful at night. for a refreshing ride if you do go through at night take the jackson or monroe exit east to lake shore drive and go north to north avenue. Exit north avenue and take north avenue west to I-90/94. No traffic at night and really a cool ride. probably only add about ten minutes, but watch your speed on lake shore drive.
    This way you see downtown
