We are finally home from our first trip to Baja Mexico. This ride report is about 3 riders, Mark Beard ( a.k.a. Flyingbeard ), Tom Coulter ( a.k.a. Hipster ) and Chad Berger (a.k.a. rokklym ) and our trip to the holy land and our chance encounter with one of its legends.

All told, we logged in 1850 miles doing a big figure eight of the Baja peninsula from Tecate down to Loreto and back in 9 days. We got to see a lot of amazing things and meet some great people and came back relatively unscathed but the bikes certainly need a lot of TLC.

Here is our story.

A trip to Baja from the upper Midwest is no small deal, this is a full on expedition for us. The plan was hatched last fall by Tom and I after a ride out to the Black Hills of South Dakota fell through. We started saying, well maybe we can do the Black Hills trip next spring, and then I said, what about Baja instead? Both Tom and I wanted to go there, heck, who doesnÂ’t? Well, are we going to just talk about it and let it get pushed aside like plans often do or are we going to say, hell yeah we are doing this? The answer was certainly the hell yes, and a rough date was decided upon, all we had to do was deal with the details.

Details: Ah the planning! Passports were acquired, Riding gear bought, new parts for the bikes were ordered and packing lists were prepared. With 6 months available to plan a trip, you have a lot of time to over think things. We also decided that it would be nice to have more than just the two of us so the word was put out to a few riding buds that we thought may be interested. At that point, Flyingbeard stepped up and said he wanted in, good, now we are doing good. Our main plan was to do the trip cheaply, camping when possible and staying in hotels when we had to.

Eventually, The time for the trip had come. Tom and Mark come down to my house on Wednesday night and we start to arrange the bikes and gear into Marks truck for the 30+ hour drive to Baja.

Nate ( the governor ) stopped by to see us off and noticed that Toms front tire was flat already. We hadn't even started on the trip and already things were getting interesting!

Tom took his wheel off and we went into the house to fix this sucker, Here you can see Mark showing off his leadership ability.

We found nothing wrong with the tube, so we decided to blame it on the valve freezing open in the cold. The next morning we got up bright and early and got on the road, baja bound.

Well, things were going good until Kansas when it started snowing. The roads were starting to get bad and we were tired so we pulled into the Super Ocho in Wichita.

After a solid 3 days of driving we cross the border at Mexicali and drive up near Tecate to the place we are leaving Marks truck. We arrive at Rancho Ojai and meet the office staff, unload our bikes and set up camp for the night.
I can't say enough good things about the people at Rancho Ojai, they treated us great and took amazing care of us.

They were all booked up but made sure we had a place to camp

We headed out towards Hacienda Santa Veronica and Laguna Hansen. The Skies were looking a little dark.

We ended up getting on a fun little trail that had a nice super deep sand whoop section that got us nicely warmed up, so we stopped here and dropped a few layers.

The reason for this stop was because Toms rear brake caliper was hanging up. This would be the cause of quite a few stops, but none of us minded a little break.

Mark lost his chain guard so we had to stop for a minute. The road to Mikes is alot longer and rougher than we expected.

Mark got just a we bit wet on the water crossing into Mikes!

It was cool to finally be at Mikes, I've seen so many pics of the place over the years.

met Mikes Sky Dog

Then we washed down the dust with some tasty Pacificos
[IMG]

We had the place to ourselves!

We then had a great supper and enjoyed even more Pacificos after supper while chilling out and looking at all the memorobilia at Mikes

Great so far and looking forward to more. I've never been fortunate enough to be the only group of riders staying at Mike's.
