I’d call it Cathedral Bluff.
Our aim for the night was to stay with friends near Grand Junction....and we rolled the dice and gambled that there would be enough daylight to get across the Grand Mesa via a scenic route.....there wouldn't be much time for stopping though so away we went!
Made it to @TheMuffinMan 's place at twighlight after a slightly indirect touristy route.....didn't quite beat the sunset...but we did beat total darkness so we'll call that a win.
He's no longer the schoolboy I first met that was living in a tent to save money on summer break.
All grown up now working a career in his field of study...living in a house, of all things!.…and on top of all that he's got a girlfriend that's both smart and good looking!!
Thanks for the hospitality! Not only with a place to stay but filled our bellies a couple of times too! It should have been plenty to just tolerate a couple of old farts that were worn out from two+ weeks out on the road.
Only grabbed one parting shot as we were getting ready to roll out.
We spent a good bit of the evening contemplating our next move. Hurricane Florence was heading towards my house and @Reddog* had word from home that his sweet Mrs. had broken her toe and was hobbling around on crutches.
It seemed like a good time to start aiming back East....but there was still time to make it a scenic run out of the hills and be set up to hit the great plains the next morning...as that would be a Sat with lots more traffic heading to the hills, something we'd like to miss out on anyway.
First up was to aim East for the Kebbler and Ohio passes hoping to see more golden aspens....there was some color but still a bit early as the world's largest stand of aspen was still showing quite a bit of green.....but don't worry, I did catch a few colorful pics to post for ya.
A few from the phone....same spot on the south side of Ohio pass..
Probably not too bad of a back porch to sit and watch the sunset....
I don't know for sure what it would be like working on that ranch.....but the view is just a bit nicer than the job site that deposits money in my account....
Off the Ohio and down into a very busy Gunnison for a bite of lunch, followed by a run through the twisty canyon on 114 and on to Saguache.
One little side trek up a bumpy two track just to have a looksie.
From Saguache north over Poncha Pass then down the canyon on 50 to Can'on City. The first 20some mile really sucked...we were backed up in a long line of traffic behind an 18 wheeler driven by a guy that checked both boxes for the I A factor....yep, he was an idiot because he didn't know how to drive and an asshole because he wouldn't use a pullout and let the literal miles of traffic behind him clear out.
No pics of that....but we somehow got up through the line of traffic after a number of other cars pulled of in the next town, no help from the other I's and A's in line though that didn't have the power to pass and didn't want anybody else to either.
But......finally clear and nothing but open road now.
