Pulling the lock is fairly easy, and you can just take it to a local locksmith and have them cut a key... if you use a BMW blank call the locksmith first as the BMW blanks are stainless and some lock shops won't cut 'em...

you can also post the 4 digit code here, don't know if it is the lock code, but I have several ignition keys and if I have a match I will send you a key to try out (free).

I took it to a locksmith who could get just about every one except the 88 R110GS.

It was easy to take apart the ignition on my '93... and you could turn it by hand (no key) for testing...

I'll do that if it comes to it. I'm thinking that I will pull the heads just to make sure the bore isn't messed up. I have been told it's a chrome bore, have no idea if that's right. It could blister ? Any way, I will go in and clean up the carbon, see if the valves hold gas etc.

So, no real hurry on the key, need one to open the tank, I don't want to drill out the lock on it.

The original owner said it ran fine when parked. I have mousekeeping set up in the airbox! Did you get my pm with the lock number?

So, I got some new keys and they work, only $34. Shipped. Quite the deal! Anyway, the gas cap wont open. I reckon it wont "catch". The cap and the plastic sleeve just spin around. Once now and then I feel a little resistance. Ideas???

Rusty nipples shouldn't really hold you back :) I'd move it way down the to-do list.

Hey David, I can't remember how the cap works on those bikes. Some of them you can break with a bunch of upward pressure while turning. A little PB Blast or Kroil in the keyhole might help. I've never come across one siezed. Also, I don't remember a BMW having a chrome bore. I thought they were Nikasil. You've been hanging around Guzzi's too long>:lol3 Might as well sell me that LeMans and get on the airhead train.:clap

It spins around easily in both directions. I have put PB in every orifice (you clowns will like that) including the key slot. It's just is not catching with the key turned in either direction. Chisel and hammer? Drill it out?

I am thinking about installing WP forks on the ODM. I have a set off a KTM 950 SM. I also want a 19" wheel off a newish 1200 GS. A slightly shorter than stock WP shock out back. Hmmm...

    The bike now has:
    new rings
five new gears including circlip fix, it had about a cup of water in the trans
    all trans bearings new
    three angle valve job
    new stator
    new coil
    total carb rebuild
    all new cables
    all new seals
    new tires
and more. I get to ride it as soon as the tank liner cures.

Congrats on the find but you can't toss out that news about all those upgrades/fixes and that the bike is running without giving us pics!

Don't rush that. If anything, give it extra time.
