Went out on my first real deal ADV ride with some experienced friends this weekend. Smashed 623 miles in a day and a half. Way more than I'm used to, especially off road. Had a blast riding and learning as always. We went all the way up around 36/3 area, and had an amazing time. Didn't see many people out there at all, which was really nice. Definitely think I want the GSA next time around though.

    I was on my R1200GS.

It was bad wording on my part. I meant when I sell this GS, I will get a GSA. I originally never anticipated being on a trip that had gas stops spaced as far as they were.

I'm planning on strapping a gas can to my rear rack, I've got a 250 mile range (on pavement, that's with a 3.7 gal tank) or more but the gas station is usually 50 miles away from where you want to ride lol

Adding another 2.5 gal sounds like a good idea

Last weekend I rode from Los Banos to Posey (an hour and a half east of 99) and riding back out I had another 20 or 30 miles to empty when I got the gas station (I stopped for gas in Fresno on the way in) but wish I had more when I was out there

Thought you had both in the garage, and just picked the wrong bike that trip...

Anyone interested in meeting up at a campground for an overnight (Sat night) in Philo/Navarro area?

Down to meet up at AVBC before hand too, and to grab food in the area.

Getting my Alt Rider luggage plate on later today! Bye bye pillions!

Also I had to reschedule the Bay Area Riders Group big ADV bikes in Hollister event to October. Let me know if anyone wants any info :)

I got a few pairs of 44 boots for sale if anyone is interested. Forma Adventure, A* Roam Air 2, A* Mono Fuse.

Del Monte Canyon/Bodie Creek for Dummies! :fpalm

also known as Bodie Road/State Rte 3C ... have taken this road years ago (I guess, ha) from the Bodie ghost town to get over to Lucky Boy Pass.

things started fine in Friday, 09/06/2019:

dropping into Bodie from Masonic Mountain on Bodie-Masonic Road ...

made a left at Bodie and passed by the old stone ruins on Bodie Road ...

our first clue things may not be as I recalled from the last time I rode a KLR through here ...
an abandoned car sorta-blocking the road.

a couple hundred yards downhill from the car, and the road just disappeared into Bodie Creek ...

we decided to turn around and try to ride back out the way we'd come.
a view back to my bike after we'd turned it around on the side-stand ...
for me, much easier riding a loaded KLR down this stuff than climbing up it ... :lol3

my walk-of-shame, for the entertainment of the KTM friends ... :deal

however, we finally made it back out, double ha.

didn't find anything about this road being much harder than it used to be here on ADV Rider ... have I just not
    been paying attention ...? :dunno

Is the road fine again after the crux through the canyon ...? We'd had some recent rain, but were not seeing much evidence that folks were getting through anymore ...

anyway, that's my Del Monte Canyon/Bodie Creek/Bodie Road report, complete with n00bie questions ... see you around the campfire! :gerg

I tried coming up Del Monte Canyon from the 9Mile ranch side a few weeks ago on my Africa Twin. Didnt make it very far. I was solo and had to turn that beast around. I don't know if there are any plans to clear and reopen the road.

well, it’s a bit easier finding road info when you know the correct name of the canyon ... :lol3

found some Del Monte Canyon info from 2009/2010 here on Ghosttowns.com. Last couple posts talk about the road being washed out about where we were ... can’t imagine it’s the same truck though ... found a pic from last time I was through Del Monte Canyon in 10/2010 (also knew the proper name then, ha):

this nine-year-old pic looks to be below were we turned around last week based on the power lines ...

my hope is whoever has to maintain the power lines will need to drive a dozer up the road when a work truck has to get up there ... :dunno

I’ll follow your example next time and go uphill first from the 9 Mile side ... :ricky

I feel it. Currently stuck late at work due to a production server being completely toasted. Everyone is freaking out. Ugh. I just wanna ride, but have to take the bike in for valves tomorrow. I'll be stuck sending it in the car this weekend :( At least it's a Miata :)

Anyone have any fun plans this weekend?

Anyone want to grab a drink in Oakland next week?
