One of the ironies of history is that, as hard as battling armies tried to kill each other, disease killed more.

Originally purchased by the federal government to build a battery to protect the port of Philadelphia, the land became a cemetery by 1863 for Confederate prisoners of war who died while in captivity at Fort Delaware. One hundred and thirty five Union soldiers who died while serving as guards at the prison camp are also buried here. The death toll among prisoners of war and the guards was high, especially in the latter part of 1863 and throughout 1864. By July 1863, there were 12,595 prisoners on the island at nearby Fort Delaware which was only about 75 acres (30 ha) in size. Disease was rampant and nearly 2,700 prisoners died from malnutrition or neglect. Confederate prisoners interred at the cemetery totaled 2,436 and all are in a common grave as can still be seen as a huge pit in the north western corner of the site near the monument.

IMG_7582.JPG IMG_7585.JPG I had earlier posted a pics of a confederate cemetery in south jersey. This past weekend I was visiting a friend in Ohio.we visited the Johnson island confederate prison/cemetery. It was for only officers. That rank was seen on all the head stones.
Johnson's Island is a 300-acre (120 ha) island in Sandusky Bay, located on the coast of Lake Erie, 3 miles (4.8 km) from the city of Sandusky, Ohio. It was the site of a prisoner-of-war camp for Confederateofficers captured during the American Civil War. Initially, Johnson's Island was the only Unionprison exclusively for Southern officers[3] but eventually held privates, political prisoners, persons sentenced to court martial and spies.[4] Civilians who were arrested as guerrillas, or bushwhackers, were also imprisoned on the island.[5] During its three years of operation, more than 15,000 men were incarcerated there.
