A few weeks back a heavily modified CB350F I had for sale was posterized in the “craigslist dumbass” thread.

    I was honored!

Here are some of the highlights. I think it was inmate Loudo that offered me up to the wolves. It was a feeding frenzy from there.

My sense of humor, stylistic sense, mechanical ability and skill as a motorcyclist in general were all called into question.

I took it all with a grain of salt. I don’t want anyone here to think this thread is a “I told you so” or “you guys are clueless” or anything of the sort.

I’ve never seen a situation where the dumbass chimed in to say what happened. So why not be the first?

For clarity... I’m not looking for any apologies. Sarcastic well wishes or token offers of pretend or 1/2 hearted congratulations are not necessary.

    To be continued.

Brief backstory. This 1973 CB350F was heavily modified decades ago by a mystery person. I got it earlier this year as an unfinished project. I finished it to a level that I thought it was “done”.

Bring a Trailer wanted the bike with no reserve. I thought about it. I figured I’d try for a few months on my own at $5k and see what happened.

A fair bit of interest from Seattle hipsters. Some “almost” deals. But no sale.

But then a couple days ago a young man contacted me asking about the bike. He had purchased a new CB300R 4 months previous and didn’t care for it after 750 miles. He asked if I might have interest in his bike and some $$$ for the 350F.

Today we struck a deal. I offered to remove the “cafe racer” decal but he thought it was humorous and requested I leave it in place. I explained the custom made 4-tube positive crankcase ventilation system and he at least nodded.

He texted me after the ride home saying how much of a blast it was.

Again. This isn’t meant to rub anyone’s face into their previous words or anything of the sort. I’ve been in the bike world as an enthusiast and professionally for a long time. Been called much worse than a dumbass.

There is an ass for every seat as they say.

Good to hear an outcome on one of these stories. Somewhere on the web there's a cluster of them we can only dream of hearing.

I'm sincerely glad you feel the sale of the bike worked out for you.

That said, c'mon--instead of just posting the update in the "CL dumbass" thread, you generate a whole new thread to appeal to the larger advrider audience complete with lengthy screenshots to provide all the gory details of the comments your bike/ad generated (when anybody so inclined could just look at the posts in the thread itself), and you don't provide any specific particulars/valuations of the transaction--e.g., what's KBB/market value for the CB, how much additional cash was paid, did the guy have free and clear title for the CB, is it undamaged, etc.

You also (attempt to) intrinisically confer "dumbass exempt" status to the new owner of the bike, as if dumbassery is an affliction that is restricted to only sellers and not buyers. Which is to say, "there is an ass for every seat" can be readily expressed as "there's a sucker born every minute". Just because someone bought the thing doesn't *necessarily* validate the thing.

And throughout, you broken-record repeatedly claim you're not motivated by any notions of vindication/revenge and state that you took all the criticisms of your bike/ad as an honor and with a grain of salt.

And you seriously expect readers of this thread to believe that last bit? Again, c'mon; one can't but wonder if you'dve been so inclined to create this thread had you not been able to conclude a respectable deal for the bike. If anything, the existence/nature of this thread suggests the exact opposite of your professed "non-motivations". Which is all to say, just do like many/most of us do: be satisfied with the deal you made and content with the conviction that everyone (else) on the internet is a moron. :thumb :lol3

south you don’t get me. And that’s ok. I don’t get a lot of people either.

The basics of the deal are I ended up slightly better than just selling the 350F for $5k. I didn’t feel that was important but since you asked there you go. The 2019 Honda (new condition, 750 miles, ASV levers, bar ends and a tail tidy) I took on trade will sell for $4k with a modicum of effort. You can do the math from there.

South, I think that yes, finding a buyer does actually validate the “thing”.

While I often question the motive or wisdom of sellers that list parts or bikes for what I would consider above market value, I don’t get so offended to the point where I would call them names.

This behaviour epitomizes the corrosive nature of the internet.

You think someone is asking too much for a part, then you post it in the dumbass thread and fish for validation......

I think the 300R for that CB350f was a hell of a good trade.

Better brakes, better transmission, better tires, better frame, pretty much the same HP.

There's an ass for every seat. If you profit from building "stupid" things, are they really that stupid? I just sold a hacked up GL500 I had laying around for more than twice what I paid for it before I cut it up, kid was over the moon to buy it too. Probably would've ended up here if the CL thread regulars used OfferUp.

Sorry, but I kinda like it. It's not for me now that I'm an old fart and that seat looks like a medieval torture device, but at least it has fenders. It will look good parked outside a local tavern - if we ever get to do that again.

Modifying the CB 350F to any but completely stock condition is in itself a dumbass move. Buying a CB 350F that has been altered, with no intention of bringing back to stock, is also the mark of a dumbass.

Treating a piece of metal as something so sacred that it can't be personalized is pretty damn dumb too.

That is my old purple M3 thank you for noticing. When I got it from the original owner (who maintained it to the letter for 20 years) in 2018 it was basically like new. Thankfully he tinted the glass so the interior isn’t baked. Of course driving around like this is risky as I might be regarded as another asshole in a BMW but hey life is dangerous.

The new owner of the CB350F has checked in a few times. He seems to be enjoying the bike.

Meh. I’m not into hacking ujm’s into “cafe racers”, but then I’m not into beard oil either. If it makes you happy when you ride it, then go for it. I didn’t think the bike was too terrible. There’s far worse custom jobs out there for sure.

Glad I didn't join the troll now, must admit I do when it's worth it. It has happened that a 'victim' got in touch with the dumb ass thread before, think he lasted two days...but his bike was really really bad. Glad you got a good deal on yours. Not a BMW car fan but I did really enjoy borrowing a 730 a few years back, it was white so drove it to a wedding, cooked up at about 120mph and bent the cylinder head like a banana. Bring More Water as they are known in the UK.
