I got the best vanilla slice from a bakery on the main street of Wangaratta when travelling with @havafati in 2014.
When I returned with WifeSilla in tow in 2018 to buy some more I couldn't find it, and asking a few questions of their competitors revealed the owner had grown too old and simply shut up shop and retired. Very sad for my tummy. They were a sensation.

@GodSilla You were in the wrong town mate. It was Bertalli's Alpine Bakery in Benalla. The best damn Vanilla Slice of my life.

    Cheers,

Homemade pie from the Crown Cinema Cafe in Crookwell NSW. I'm positive this is the best beef, cheese & bacon pie I've ever eaten.....:dukegirl

Had a sausage roll from the Clunes bakery - fantastic. Actually had sausage mince in it and I didn't notice any breadcrumbs at all.

Also, the pies at the pie shop in Tooborac are awesome - pricey at $9 or so.. but a significant feed. Beers brewed next door at the pub are pretty decent too.

You are dead right there Dave. My bad. I recalled pulling off the highway to the left and feeding then rejoining the highway and for some reason Wangaratta got stuck there, but I see now I have been mistaken.

    I must go back. :pynd

It feels like a magnet inside of me..........:dukegirl

That pie sure looks good too DS, I am starving and off to make a pizza for myself, ham capsicum and fresh mushroom. But I want that pie right now you bastard.:tb

The last time I stopped at Cobargo bakery the plain pie was pretty average, and that is being charitable. Maybe the curry one is better made, I dunno.

I only get the curry ones there, they taste like curry, not like most of them. Might hide some sins, dunno.

Curry powder can disguise a multitude of culinary no-no's. A mate and I survived on baked bean or spaghetti jaffles for 4 days at Phillip Island by spicing them up with diced Spam and Keens curry powder. Farts were interesting, but otherwise all good.

I just spent a couple of nights at Latrobe Tasmania and visited the Latrobe bakery a few times all good. Also the Golden Grain bakery in Deloraine had an excellent cherry pie and good coffee.

I stopped in at the Bindoon Bakehaus today. 90 kays north of the city, it seems to be very popular with Perth riders. Purely for the sake of research for this forum, I tried a Vanilla Slice.

The snot block was OK but I've had better for less money in other places.

    Some interesting decor inside.

Later in the day and 60 kays up the road I had a very good coffee at the Five Roads Cafe in the old Roads Board building in Calingiri. I didn't try any but they had some nice looking locally made sweet pastries & slices.

Currently at Beechworth sitting out the rain.
The bakery here is doing a blackberry pie (seasonal I reckon) which was good.
Thin sweet pastry with a slightly tart filling.
Their coffee has definitely improved over the last few years as well

Most people passing Gundagai on the Hume Boreway get usual get the varied greased foods at South Gundagai or Snake gully, sad, very sad. Instead go into Gundagai and try the HISTORIC GUNDAGAI BAKERY in the main street. Have been stopping there for year now but a snapshot from this week.
Coffee - late (no I don't ride a Ducati) very enjoyable
Mushroom Pie, would be amongst the best mushroom pies I have ever had - and that's a large number,
Cream Bun, for those old enough to remember the cream buns we used to get at school in the 60's & 70's, this bakery still makes them and they are just as good as my memory tells me they were. :-):-):-):-):-):-)

Lots more to choose from, not only at the bakery but other varied food places along the street.
