The next morning it was still raining and our gear was still wet. Did I mention my piece of shit side cases leak? We had the free hotel breakfast and got ready to go. We checked out, put on our rain gear and pointed further east. About an hour later the rain stopped. This would be the last rain we would see for the rest of the trip but I didn’t know that at the time.

We made it to somewhere Manitoba. I stopped for gas. Patty said that hotel across the parking lot looks ok. I said go check it out while I get gas. Off she went. With her helmet on. I could hear her conversation on the SENA communicator. She was happy with the room so I told her to take it. The room was nice and not that expensive. The gas station had a Subway and a beer store beside it. We turned the room into a refugee camp to get our gear dried out

The next day we would make it to our good friends place in Tyndall. This part of the story was also one of the reasons for doing this trip

I met my buddy Rolly when we were working for the same company in Abu Dhabi. We would later meet again when we were working for different companies in Dubai. Rolly had married one of the nicest Philipina ladies you will ever meet. We went 4 wheel drive camping in the sand dunes many times and went to countless Friday brunches together. Rolly built a nice house in the Philippines and retired about the time I changed jobs and moved back to Abu Dhabi. We kept in touch.

I contacted to let him know what we were up to he said please come by and visit. As we were getting closer he said Emily had some family with them and there house was full. I said we could put our tent in his back yard if he’s ok or we can stay in a hotel. He said nonsense my neice has a fifth wheel trailer I’ll get her to bring it over. I said no we can stay in our tent. It’s fine.

When we got there there was a trailer set up in his driveway with water and electricity for us. Seriously Rolly?

When Rolly retired they went to the Philippines. He made a trip to Canada to visit family. While he was there he wasn’t feeling well so went to see a doctor. The doctor said something isn’t right here and referred him to a specialist. Stage 4 cancer. Shit bugger crap! Another good friend going down?

I’m tired of getting old and am going to fight it for as long as I can.

We have a hug a beer and a ton of food. Emily’s family are living in Florida and are super nice people.

Rolly explains to me more... When he was diagnosed with cancer it was not good. His specialist asked if he would try a new procedure that had only been approved by the Canadian government three months previously. His specialist had been studying the procedure for a few years and said it works. Rolly said ok. He still has stage 4 cancer but it has stopped progressing. He is still undergoing treatment and hurts a lot. He asked his doctor to proscribe him medical marijuana and his doctor said no but referred him to a doctor that would. I didn’t know about this but apperantly they can tailor the drug so you don’t really get high and still get the pain relief effect. He goes in the garage in the evenings and smokes it in one of those vaporizer things and it eases the pain in his bones. Now you know.

Our plan was to stay with them for two nights. Rolly asks me to stay for two months. We stayed for 5 nights. Emily’s brother in law loves fishing so Rolly suggests we go fishing the next day. Sounds good. Fishing rods in hand and a six pack of beer and the three of us go river fishing. I haven’t done that forever and it was a blast. I caught a cat fish to take back to the girls.

The next day Emily’s family wanted to go into the city and explore. I had been to Winnipeg several times in the past and had no interest in it. Neither did Rolly so we stayed behind and Patty went with them to the city. Rolly asked if I wanted to go for a drive and he’d show me the area.

We drove and talked all day. He showed me the area he grew up in and a house on a lake that he used to own. We stopped and talked with some of his relatives along the way. Apperantly Rolly had told them about Patty and I previously and they were all curious of our story and welcomed me like I was part of their family. It was a great day with him. The others had fun exploring the city with Emily as the tour guide. I should mention Emily is kind of like the energizer bunny. Endless energy

The following day Emily’s family departed back to Florida. They invited us to stay with them at their home in Ft Lauderdale.

Patty’s shoulder was really bothering her. Rolly suggested seeing a chiropractor. I have mixed feelings about these guys and explained why. She decided to give it a try and Rolly made the call. She could get in right away but the office was closing soon so Emily rushed her to the office.

I checked my email. Hmm, this could be a problem. I hadn’t told many people other than family and friends that I wanted to see that I had quit my job and was riding around aimlessly on a motorbike. The email was from a good friend and he simply asked me what I was up to. I know where he’s at and what he’s up to. The cat could be out of the bag here. I told him Patty and I were riding around North America on a motorbike. He responded that he had heard about that and asked me if I’d be interested in helping him with a project. Ah crap!

Sandy is my good friend. He’s Canadian and we meet years ago in Abu Dhabi working for the same company. He’s visited us in Thailand several times and he always seems to bring us good luck.

Patty returned from the chiropractor. It turns out she has a frozen shoulder. He explained there’s not much she can do about it other than some excersizes that he showed her. I looked it up on the internet. This could be a show stopper. I asked her if she wanted to fly back to Vancouver and I would figure out what to do with the bike. She said she’s fine.

The internet says it’s raining like crazy to the east where I want to go and I need to make some decisions what to do. I say to Patty I got an email from good luck Sandy. He wants me to help him on a project in Uganda. She says where is that? I say central Africa. She says cool, can I come? Really woman?

I’ve worked contract most of my life and never really know when the next paycheck will come so I have a hard time turning down work. But I’m having a blast here and I’m not ready to go back to work. Patty is my way out of this. I email good luck Sandy and tell him Patty says ok if she can come along. He says no problem if your willing to come work full time. Shit!

I’m going to need to take a different approach here. I figure out a solution and ask him how much his company will pay. Bingo! Not enough for me to give up my life so I tell him this. He says let me talk to the owner of the company. Umm, he’s supposed to be offended by my refusal. Bummer?

The long term forecast to the east doesn’t look good. My grand plan was to do a sort of loop around North America then park the bike somewhere in BC. With the customs hassle in Vancouver I decided I needed a different plan and I still wanted to see two more friends in Mississippi. The next day we said good bye to Emily and Rolly and headed south.

Before we left Emily and Rolly I thought I’d email good luck Sandy. I really hate to turn away work. I suggested if the job was only one project maybe it would be better if I went for a short time to check it out and then we decide what to do. He was happy with this and said he’d get back to me

I felt emotional as we left Rolly and Emily. I think Patty did also. We didn’t turn on the communications and rode thru the country side in silence. I’m a guy and we don’t talk about this shit but this trip might be taking its toll on me. I felt like going fast. There was not much traffic so I opened it up. Patty didn’t complain

I decided we would try the small border crossing south of Winnipeg rather than the main one. As we were getting close I turned on the comms and told Patty the crossing should be up ahead but we were in the middle of nowhere and I thought I might be on the wrong road. The gps said go straight and I had gas in the tank. Let’s see

We come around the corner and there it was. The most lonely border crossing ever. I said to Patty I’m not sure if it’s open.

We pulled up to the window. Nobody. I turned the bike off and asked Patty to hop off. I looked thru the window and saw a middle aged lady. She had nice glasses. She jumped up sort of surprised and came to the window. Good morning she said, passports please. She asked where we were going and I explained our situation. She said that’s so cool and started to hand our passports back then stopped. She had forgot to process them. Patty complimented her on her nice glasses. She said many people say that. Once she scanned our passports she wished us safe travels and we drove back into the US. The whole process took about 10 minutes. Shame on you Canada customs for being dick heads in Vancouver.

I didn’t have a plan where we would stay tonight. I was just happy to be across the border without being strip searched. We were in the middle of no where farm country. It was perfect. I turned right as it was raining to the left.

We came to a crossroad and I saw a small cafe. We pulled in for lunch and they had free wifi. Patty got a message from my daughter asking where are we? Patty told her. I get a message from my daughter saying I think she has lost her mind, she says your in mini soda? English isn’t Patty’s mother tounge and sometimes the stuff she comes up with is pretty funny. I told my daughter no we are stopped for lunch in Minnesota state and are headed towards the Grand Canyon.

I looked at google maps and decided we would head to Fargo. There was no reason for this just the name stuck in my head.

We found a cool hotel there. The cost was ok and they had a courtyard with trees and hot tubs in the middle of the building. We took advantage of it and enjoyed some time alone together.

I used the free wifi in the hotel and consulted google maps for the next days destination. Badlands? I said to Patty “we are a couple of bad ass dudes do you want to go to the bad lands?” She said ok. I asked her if she knew what state we are in. She said no. Badlands it is then

I’m not sure how anyone could possibly live there. But it was cool to see.

Patty hadn’t seen this kind of thing before and asked me why the Native American Indians live like this. I grew up with it in Canada and kind of looked at it as being normal. I couldn’t think of a good answer so I told her they can change if they want to. She grew up in poverty in Thailand and decided to change her life at some point. She thought about it and said yup

My plan was to take her to Denver. It’s a cool city. We stopped in Loveland’s and had a look for something to eat. We had passed some hotels so we decided to stay there. We found a funky little place to eat and had a bottle of wine. I looked on the internet about Denver and decided I didn’t want to deal with the big city. We had been avoiding big cites as much as we could up to this point. The room was average and a bit expensive.
