Anyone know of a super easy to install paint protection film (no hairdryers and hours ironing out bubbles!) for the top part of a GSA 1250 / 1200 tank (where a tank bag sits? The Wunderlich 3 pad kit I've seen doesn't cover the whole of the top part of the tank. Wonder why BMW or someone doesn't make something for this? Seems bonkers! A tank bag will scratch that area for sure. Anyone have a solution? Many thanks. LBJ.

My solution, click on tank bag that never touches the paint.

Agreed! I have a fairly new GS bag which straps on though.

Convert it like I did mine.

Givi makes a kit IIRC. I cut the straps off.

Years ago the 3M film kits on eBay were really good. I did my entire 2007 GS and it held up well for a decade. Now, I'm looking to redo it and cannot seem to find the same kits anywhere. It's was a 3M film and did require bubble removal, but it didn't take much time at all

Yes, I had some 3M type thick film on my old oil/air cooled GS for about 7 years on the tank under a tank bag. When I removed it, the tank was 'showroom'. Can't remember where I got it.

    JVB,
    Tell me more.
Could really use more info on converting a tank bag to “strapless”.
    Thanks.

The kit I used no longer exists, but Givi sells a ring and mount.

When I occasionally wish to use a tank bag on a long trip, I just apply a layer of clear Con-Tact brand shelf paper to the top of my tank. Easy to cut, easy on, & easy off at the end of the trip. $6 worth has lasted me for about 10 years now. I still have a lot left.

3m and competing products commonly called "helicopter tape" can be found in various sizes, often to include 12" x 12" sheets. These can be cut with a sharp blade using a template of paper as a guide for the desired shape. The effort requires patience and attention to detail.

True custom fit products for the latest 1250 bikes are surely forthcoming, but they do not yet appear to be readily available. Patience!

They already exist. I put some on a spanking new R1250GSA HP:

I just stopped in at the local sign shop, picked up some red vinyl that matched the bike’s red, and ran strips wherever the bag and straps made contact with the tank. Even with the bag off, it’s not that noticeable. And since they had what I needed in the scrap pile, no charge.

Extremely nice job. Which exact part/kit is this please? I'll work on the patience :-) or find a local expert to do it for me! Where did you route the GPS power lead by the way? To the battery or the BMW socket in the dash. Again, specific detail/s / parts would be really helpful. Thanks dude.

Xpel ultimate gloss tank protector kit (gloss paint and polished tank). Might order matte for the side panels with unpolished tank.
