I am considering either a top box or tank bag for my new (to me) 2018 1290 R.

I have ordered SW motech mounts for my SW motech trax ii panniers, but like the idea of a simple access tank bag.

Anyone have recommendations/suggestions from recent or long term purchases?

I recommend you wait until Mosko Moto comes out with their Pico 2.0.

While I prefer the original Pico:

Due to it's size and ability to not sit over the gas tank, they no longer make it due to some phones overheating while being on in the pouch (never happened to mine :dunno)

Don't know of anyone else making smaller tank bags like this except for Giant Loop's Buckin' Roll, but I greatly prefer packing light to enormous tank bags.

I prefer a bit larger bag, so I opted for the 2020 Wolfman Blackhawk tank bag. 11 liter capacity and fully waterproof.

I have the KTM branded tank bag sold for these bikes. It’s just a rebranded SW Motech quicklock. I love that bag! I found an SW Motech micro with the electric mount on amazon and bought it so I could have a small bag for daily use and swapped the electric mount to my big bag which has been nice for trips.

I also have had a givi tanklock bag and really liked it too.

I prefer tank bags that clip on vs straps or magnets

Not sure if your just looking for a tank bag which I have the KTM ring mount type. Its alright bit broke part of the ring first slow low side 2 up in mud. Still works but would get a different one next time. If your looking for a top box too there is an inmate on here who makes pretty nice ones. He would probably make a custom one if need be. I'll give you his link. Might be an option for you if you want unique? I'm ready to pull the trigger.

    A note about tank bags:
1.) Hard tank bags can feel like a punch in the stomach when riding off road.
2.) The Bags Connection tank lock ring is plastic and the plastic ring will break off when off road riding.

You're talking two totally different storage sizes between a tank bag and top case. Figure out how much junk you plan on stuffing in them and choose from there.

I have the OEM ktm top case for long haul trips or when I need to have storage for runs to the store for small goods, and use a small 5 liter givi tank bag with the tank lock system for day trips with to store my hat, glasses, etc.

SW-Motech quick lock system is aluminum for the part that mounts to the tank. That's the system I use. Still plastic on the bag part, but haven't had any issues off-roading with it yet.

I have both. It if I could only choose 1, top box hands down. The ability to lock my helmet and gloves in it when I go to the store, movies, whatever where before I have to carry them around is awesome, can throw a couple bags of groceries in it, be hard to love without it now. I hate panniers with a passion, either side loading which sucks to use or they are wide as a damn car
