Anyone managed to use a ortlieb or other bicycle pannier on a motorcycle ( expecially dirt ) sucessfully? They seem to have their own mounting methodology ( some proprietary ) so I was wondering. thanks for any info

It has been done with limited success.

The panniers are usually a very good size/shape for a dirtbike, but the mounts are not up to even mild riding. If you can figure out how to upgrade the mounting hardware (some are easy enough to remove) to fit larger diameter tubes of most MC racks and strong enough to handle spirited riding, you would probably have a good setup.

why would you want panniers on a dirt bike, please?
or did you talk about dual sport bikes?

    my limited success so far:
10 years of commuting and some extensive traveling
with 1 1/2 sets of Ortlieb backrollers,
one bag 'disappeared' at a gas station,
hence 1 1/2 sets and the black + blue combo

    I stand corrected. Nice job.

FWIW, when I said dirt bike I meant a small DS'd dirtbike--the kind that MC panniers aren't available.

    that's how mine started
the XL200 in the top picture
did commute by bicycle all summer
but in Winter we had to much snow and bicycle lights and backroads in the dark ... so the XL got to be my cheap means of transportation
$5 worth of hardware and my already well broken in panniers made it my 'family car'
the same solution held up across Cinnamon Pass in early June and 100mph unpaved in AK

the tank panniers in the 2 lower pictures
they were designed for XL600, 1st used them in 94 on an XR600 on a trip to Spain, they are not waterproof but keep my knees warm in winter
other than the Tusk or Walmart versions they will not move no matter how fast or rough not even if one side is empty and the other full of rocks
