Up early to beat the Atlanta traffic to the ATL airport. Met up with Ty, checked our dry bags and had an uneventful flight to Denver. Picked up the bags and took an Uber to the warehouse to pick up the bikes. After a little trouble finding the place, we met up with our rides and unpacked our riding gear and then repacked everything for riding. Quick fuel and food stop and made it to our hotel in Westminster, CO. We are both tired, so a little nap before dinner. Big day tomorrow.

    Day 2
Full days ride today and we got an early start at 7:00 am. For anyone who has never been Boulder, CO is beautiful and I can see why folks like to live there. We took a twisty looking road from boulder to Nederland and were not disappointed. Great views as we followed a river the whole way. Stopped at Boulder falls for a photo opp. Photos will have to wait until tomorrow when I have better Wifi. We are in a cabin at the KOA in Craig, CO. R-O-C-K in the KOA... I CAN’T GET THAT SONG OUT OF MY HEAD. thanks John Mellencamp. Great picks hopefully we can share tomorrow. We also did Rocky Mountain National Park which was awesome. We found a gravel road, but the cars were going so slow it was hard to keep the bike balanced. It was a one way and many motorists pulled over for us, but we stopped a few times to give the train of cars time to get ahead. We got stuck behind a couple vehicles following a cyclist as he summitted at 12,000 ft. Quote of the day from Ty-“How much do you have to hate yourself to do that”. Please spare the wrath from the cyclist enthusiasts out there, it was funny at the time. 49 degrees F at the summit and 85 F now, so hard to dress for these temps on the bike. Par for the course in the Rocky Mountains. Once we got out of the park we had a great Burger in Grander, CO. US 40 west of Grander was amazing. Range land with the Colorado River, rolling vistas, trains, cattle, horses and a few deer. Steamboat Springs was nice, but not much vertical drop to the ski hill. From my prospective the number one profession in town was spending cash on s#%t you don’t need, therapy or serving those that can do all that without earning a paycheck. More tomorrow.

Left Craig, CO and headed west on US 40. Loads of range land out there and miles between gas stations. Stopped at Dinosaur National Monument in Colorado and took a 60+ mile round-trip to checkout scenic vistas of the Green and Yampa River Canyons. Very cool views and very few visitors. We did have the opportunity to travel down to the Canyon floor on the bikes near the convergence of the Green and Yampa and in hindsight we probably should have. We opted to head West and had lunch in Dinosaur, CO at a great local sandwich shop. After lunch we traveled south on the East side of the Green River and crossed to the West side on UT 43. Then down horseshoe bend road which turned to gravel, then clay to view the horseshoe bend in the Green River. Not as scenic as some of the 7 or so horseshoe bends on rivers throughout the US SW, but worth the trip. Ended up in Vernal, UT for the evening with 35 MPH wind gusts and 94 degree temps. Enjoyed the hotel pool.

We left Vernal, Utah at 7:00 am after sharing the breakfast room with 20-30 young, bearded USFS Firefighters. Some small fires somewhere, but nothing major in our path . Headed North on US 191 and stopped at a lookout sponsored by Simplot Phosphates LLC. The articulated dump trucks look like Matchbox vehicles (my favorite). I can’t believe they need to remove around 95’ of overburden to get to the Phosphoria layer. Moving lots of soil as cheaply as possible. I thank them for the overlook!

Not quite as big as Hoover, but very impressive. Ty was very helpful when I was trying to photograph the info board. Very cool ride across the High Desert North into Wyoming. Stopped for lunch in farson, Wyoming at the Mercantile. Great homemade sandwich, but too full for desert. It seems this place is known for it’s massive ice cream cones. $3.96 for 1 scoop that is guaranteed to land in you lap if not enjoyed on property. At least 6 campers pulled up while we were there to get ice cream. Who know it was the new 11:00 am power snack. Over 300 miles in the book and we ended up at the Snake River/Jackson Hole KOA, right on the Snake River. Our KOA Kabin in Colorado was $65 a nigh, same Kabin here is $140-location, location, location. Cheers for now!

Very cold overnight. Only 38 degrees now, so we are slow to start this morning. Hope to ride through Grand Teton National Park on the way to Yellowstone.

We had a huge site, but had no idea the showers, store and restaurants would be so far away that we would have to ride the bikes everywhere. Not any Yellowstone key features nearby. Also temps went below freezing on the first night, so we did what was necessary and upgraded Baby to the Old Faithful Inn for our next two nights in the park

Well we got to the Old Faithful Inn and yeah we made a great decision. Beautiful and historic. Built in the Winter of 1903-04 by less than 100 workers from materials available (lodgepole pine and rhyolite stone) which was harvested and quarried on site. The main fireplace is 85’ High, weighing 200 tons. The original guest rooms share Bathrooms and showers giving guests a sense of camping. The views from the Inn also lent to this camping feel as you can view Old Faithful eruptions and view the Upper Geyser Basin from the Inn’s main Balcony. We stayed in the “new” West wing built in 1927 and oh yeah we had our own bathroom . The Inn was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987 and is definitely worth a visit. Ride well my friends

Ate a hearty breakfast and then walked through the Upper Geyser Basin near the Inn before hitting the road. Awesome Guysers and hot springs within walking distance.
