After we warmed up we jumped on the bikes and drove around the grand loop road to Canyon Village. We stopped briefly at the Visitor Center and then made our way to the South Rim Road leading us to the Artist’s Point for photos of the Lower Falls. Great view point, but if you really want to experience the Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River you have to walk to the edge which we did. 600 foot vertical decent and climb. Worth it

Left Yellowstone reluctantly and met about a long line of cars headed in from the West entrance. A lone, mature bull bison was just off the pavement and a Park Ranger was trying to urge drivers to keep moving. Backed up over 2 miles as we headed West. We turned a north after leaving the park and crossed into Montana and Big Sky Country staying on US 191 North. The weather turned grey and we felt a few drops of rain. Ty decided to put on his rain gear and in 10 minutes the sun came back out for good. We took MT 84 West to Norris, MT. Great road cutting through rolling ranch land and then following the Madison River. Lots of fly fishermen out in the River. Turned North again on US 287and stopped for lunch in the very small village of Harrison, MT. We ate at the Town Haul Diner with the locals. Conversation stopped when we walked in, but soon returned to normal as we chose someone’s regular booth. Great service and Ty destroyed the in and out burger. Neat vintage furnishings and Ty paid so what’s not to like. Ended our Day in Helena, MT.

Left Helena and took MT 279 across a small pass which was a nice ride. Even smaller roads have 70 MPH limit, but we cruised comfortably at 60. SW on MT 200 seeing tons of ATV’s, side-by-sides, campers and fishermen enjoying the Labor Day weekend. Beautiful weather again, sunny 65-75 degrees and close to zero humidity. Headed North on MT 83 and stopped for lunch at Seeley Lake. Gas station lady recommended Bay Burgers and we never would have found to without her. -ark at the steakhouse which is not open for lunch and walk down the hill toward the lake and find this hidden gem. Ty downed the 2/3 pound burger and I settled for the 1/3. Ty says best burger of the trip so far and it was great. I bet you couldn’t eat lunch outside in the sun in Georgia without sweating all over it. Great find and good thing, not much else all the way North to Kalispell, MT. Glacier in the morning. We may need tire chains

Left Kalispell, dodging rain showers on the way to Glacier National Park. We had anticipated the crowds and were not surprised to see them there. The Going-to-the-Sun Road was very cool, but finding anywhere to pull off for a photo was a challenge. We did not get out of the park until afternoon and we still had to cross the border into Canada and make our way to Cranbrook, BC over 200 miles. I missed my turn on MT17 which leads to the border crossing at AB6, so we crossed on US89 at AB2 south of Cardston, AB. Quick lunch and headed West on AB5 to Waterton Lakes NP. Rode through a small portion of the park and then North To Pincher Creek, AB to pick up the Trans Canada Highway west to Cranbrook. Very busy highway this weekend and we had to be alert. Tons of bikes on the road. Made it to Cranbrook after 5:00 pm. Cheers

Was just there this past July I wish I was back there again. Was out there last summer also. Both trips 6-8,000 miles. Long way to go from Dublin, Ohio but worth it. Enjoy and please more pics.

Another beautiful day in the Kootenay’s. Cold start to the morning, but fortified with a hearty breakfast we soldiered on until we could get our Timmy’s fix in Creston, BC. Back on the road we pulled off at a lookout on the Crowsnest Highway (BC3) above Castlegar. Great view of the town and the Columbia River Valley right below the point where the Columbia swallows the Kootenay River. The prodigal son returns as Ty visits Grand Forks, BC where he has not been in over 22 years. We cruised past our two old apartments and ate lunch at the 50’s diner which was not there in 1996-97.

    Day 12
Left beautiful Osoyoos, BC and continued our march to the Lower Mainland. Traffic came to a halt several times as we waited on crews tarring and spreading loose fine gravel on what appeared to be a good road. Through that and into Manning Provincial Park, nice ride. Stopped for lunch at the Manning Park Resort. Continued West sort of as we dodged mountains moving both SW and NW. quick rest at the Hope Slide site before jumping on the crazy 4-lane 1 at Hope headed to Surrey, BC for the night. The hope slide occurred in 1965 as the result of a minor earthquake and 46 Million cubic meters of earth, rock and snow crashed into the valley. Debris was u- to 70m thick and buried Outram Lake at the foot of the slide. Unfortunately the displaced water hit the opposite side of the valley and created a mud/snow slide killing 4 people in cars, 2 of whom were never found. The current highway is built on the debris field 55m above the original road. Major traffic jams on the way to Surrey on 1, but we made it to friend Dave McFarlane’s place. He and wife Marnie hosted us and we had fresh BC Salmon. Cheers

    Day 13.
Back to the USA and we picked the slow line at the Peace Arch crossing. Seems they were checking most vehicles and opening bags. No issues for us and I claimed my duty free Rye and t-shirt which was strapped to the bike for the agent to see. We took I-5 as we needed to stop at the BMW dealer in Tacoma to install my new tires. That managed we soldiered on to Olympia, Washington’s Capital. We will stay here two nights and explore Mount Rainier NP tomorrow. Cheers.

Left Olympia mid-morning because we are lazy and we got lost getting out of Olympia because I had GPS issues. Mount Rainier was our target and she did not disappoint. Established in 1899 it was the 5th NP in the US. At 14,410 the Mt Rainier volcano is the star of the show and you will find her staring you down throughout the park. She is the tallest in the Cascade Range and the most glaciated in the continental US. Lots of other great features in the park and I feel she gives Glacier NP a run for her money. Back to Olympia tonight and Mt St Helens tomorrow. Cheers !

Hard to believe it’s been 39 years since she blew up. Great Visitors Center and spent some time there. Great new highway to the Johnston Ridge Observatory. Clouds would not cooperate and we could not get a clear shot of the volcano.
