We took an off day Saturday to wait out some showers and finish trip planning. Took in the Farmers Market in Vancouver, WA. Left Sunday under cloudy skies, but the rain found us on OR-6 making our way to the coast. We visited the Tillamook Air Museum and had lunch at Pacific City, OR. Would have been a great place to explore, but by that time it was pouring rain, windy and cold. Never let up all afternoon and it was a challenging ride to the KOA in Oregon Dunes. Rain continued all night and morning as we made our way inland towards Grants Pass. Finally stopped raining although still a chance of showers. Crater Lake NP tomorrow.

Crater Lake National Park today and more rain. Low ceiling and we went from sun to rain to in-cloud cold fog all day. Temperatures ranged in the low 40’s-50’s. Being wet on the bike and passing through a cloud was not pleasant for us being used to hot-humid USSE riding climate. Crater Lake is a special place, but we could not stay long as we were wet and the temp was low 40’s with wind, rain, sun all together in minutes. Crater Lake was formed after a massive eruption of Mount Mazama 7,700 years ago. The eruption was so powerful that the side vents allowed the mountain to collapse upon itself. The crater formed in the caldera then collected rain and snow forming the lake. Wizard Island was formed after the lake was partially filled, by a new eruption. A volcano child within the Mama volcano . The lake is the deepest in the US at 1,943’. I love our National Parks and as my Birthday is today I wish more of us would visit our National Parks. cheers!

Fern Canyon was a nice ride. Ranger said to park the bikes at the creek crossing and hike 5 miles return. We rode through the creek and continued on the road to the parking lot. That’s what these bike do dude! The a 0.6 mile hike into Fern Canyon. They filmed part of the original JurassicPark movie here. Cool ferns growing up the sides of the Canyon walls in a huge grove of tall, straight Sitka Spruce. We met the Redwoods up close later ad man do they impress. They can grow to 380’ towering over everything and they can live to 2,000 years with no known pests. Cheers!

Sorry, it’s been a few days. Left Klamath, CA and took a detour on Bald Mountain Road. Found it on Google Maps, but a local confirmed it was a great road. Redwoods and climbing high above the clouds. Into ranch land and road turned to gravel First vehicle we saw was a Cal Fire patrol. Turned back to asphalt and many switchbacks on the way down to the Klamath River. Great road. Through California Gold Rush Country and Willow Creek, CA. Avenue of the Giants next morning and very awesome. Temps started climbing and before long it was 97 F. Glad to make it to our hotel South of Santa Rosa, CA. Golden Gate Bridge tomorrow. Cheers

Depending on what time you roll through Sausalito, I would high recommend stopping by Bar Bocce for some wood-fired pizza...it does not disappoint! Cool little place on the waterfront that has a great vibe. Gets busy fast. I got there at opening on a Saturday and it was full within an hour. They open at 11am.

Trip looks like a blast so far! I will be doing a lot of the same National Parks next year on my trip! Enjoy it, thanks for sharing!

Developed a slow leak in rear tire and it got worse overnight. Down to 15 psi this morning. Used the hand pump 3 times today when pressure fell close to 30 psi. Across the Golden Gate Bridge in the cold morning fog and followed the Pacific Coast Highway to Monterey where we are staying tonight. Cheers!

More tire inflation maintenance this morning, but leaking less than yesterday. Could not find a nail or screw in the tire and all bike shops closed Monday’s. Aired up again at lunch and it appears to be holding...sort of. Trying to stick to our schedule we have 3 more days of riding. I don’t want to miss and of the riding we have left, so I have decided to just keep airing-up as necessary. Did not sleep well last nigh worrying about the tire. Heavy fog and rain ruined our chance at any good bridge/cliff shots around Big Sur. Rain stopped and fog started to lift just North of Lucia, CA. Found an interesting West-East route through the Coast Mountains and decided to try it. Nacimento-Fergusson Road did not disappoint. Very challenging and narrow. As we created the Pass we were met by 5-6 California Highway Patrolmen on their bikes. They were waiting as 3 more came up the East side. I am kicking myself for not asking for a picture. They must have been training to ride and looked they were having fun. Down the Eastern slopes and through an Army Training base on our way East. Picked up CA198 at the 101 and cruised through some cool ranch land before lunch. After lunch continued on CA198 into the Central Valley. Straight, dusty, tons of produce and stock yards. Visalia tonight and then onto Sequoia and Kings Canyon NP’s tomorrow. Cheers.

Fingers crossed it will hold until we finish Thursday. Sequoia was awesome, but inexperienced drivers in their rented SUV’s were a hazard this morning. It’s difficult to keep your balance on a 600lb plus motorcycle to begin with. Add weight of bags out side the center of Gravity and then have an off-camber curve on a slope and some driver in front decides it’s ok to stop and take a quick photo. Happened several times and no one was heading the slower vehicles must enter take over lanes. We made it frustrated to the top and enjoyed the rest of the visit. Stopped at the General Sherman Sequoia which is the largest living tree. Also saw the General Grant Sequoia which was also impressive. Very cool at 7,000-8,000’ in the 50’s. Made it down out of the Sierras into the Central Valley and back to the heat in Fresno. Off to Yosemite tomorrow. Cheers!
