Greetings. Trip scheduled on June 3 to ride the Hills. We got caught up in the lengthy trail closures last year, and wouldn't mind avoiding a repeat. How does the snowpack and rain look so far out there? Any opinions from the locals? I know its a little early but trying to keep track of whats going on there. I know the NFS website has a few closures, so I'm good with that.

I called the Mystic Ranger District (area just west of rapid City) and as of this week everything was looking good for a full opening on the 15th, with maybe a couple exceptions for water/mud issues. I'm planning a weekend trip May 22nd, so I'll drop a note after that. Deadfall is often times my bigger concern and how much clearing I'll have to do. Always worth the effort to help when/where I can.

Holy crap.....did anybody get caught in Spearfish Canyon Friday afternoon??
That storm was some kind of evil. We kept going around trees down on the road until one totally covered the road. The wind and hail were brutal.

I am planning the same for 2021. I am wondering if the Dakal will be too much slick/muddy/etc at this time of the year.

Why so early? May isn’t exactly lovely weather around here. I don’t imagine S.D. is any better.

The price of AIRBnBs, availabilities of offerings, job schedules, and etc. I don't mind adding layers to stay warm. In fact prefer it over sweating til the cows come home.

I just don't know what to figure to route conditions.

I've spent the winter planning both DaKAL and TSDAT rides I'd like to do this year but I decided my best shot at dry conditions will be July/August. I think May has the potential to be really sloppy out there.

I’m looking out my window at 2 feet of snow in Custer today. I’ve ridden in the Hills at the end of March when it’s been 80 degrees and then on the flip side we had six inches of snow last year on Labor day. May can see a higher likelihood of rain. The weather is unpredictable in the Hills. June, July and August are good bets, but the best advice I can give you is ride more and worry less.

I'm planning on June/July; August is out due to the rally. I don't want any part of that.

I haven't used them but they have supported events and have been around for a few years. Give them a call as they are a small outfit.

How is riding in the Badlands/Black Hills in September? I’m planning a trip to the area mid to late September.
