Liking the setup - but a question. How do you prevent the iPhone or iPad from overheating on a long hot sunny day?

@GalacticGS I have ridden in cloudless 100 degree heat in Utah in August with no issues. I did take care to put my gloves over the screen when stopped for any extended length of time and or point the bike so the screen/s weren't directly aimed at the sun. I have actually had more issues when it has been well below freezing with getting the devices to charge. You need to make sure you have a 2+ amp USB port for the iPad. This was an iteration ago of my setup where I was running an iPhone and iPad mini. I couldn't get the phone to charge initially and had to swap the charging cables around to keep things running until it got closer to freezing. Most dual port USB chargers have one full 2+ amp and one 1+ amp ports.

Got mine Tuesday. It looks awesome and paired up quick and simple. Can't thank you enough for the great workmanship and quality components. Even with all the same pieces I doubt my attempt would look half as good. It seems to be working way better than my Chinese Bluclic devices but I'll need to get out and field test it as soon as we get a little better weather.

Glad it arrived safe and sound. I really like the fact there is no 'pair' button shenanigans with the newer boards, makes getting a clean setup a bit easier. Let me know how it works.

So I have been playing around with another version for those that have already invested in traditional gear but want to use a digital setup as well. This would allow for the use of your existing switchgear. It would be basically plug and play and connect with the standard M8 connectors. You would still have to provide 2 usb charging ports somewhere on the nav setup. My limitations are that I only have easy access to ICO and F2R buttons/toggles so that is all I can test with. I believe that the Aurora roadbook holder controller works the same as the F2R but not 100% on that. What setups are you running? and how much interest is there in this really?

I am running F2R switches and an F2R 730 roadbooks reader. I'm currently using one ICO and one rally-dash for my main and backup tripmeters. The rally-dash wires up exactly the same as any ICO. @MultiDoc is running one RNS XL tripmeter and an MD roadbooks reader with the Lyndon / Gany switches.

I've already got a waterproof dual USB port ready for accessories and I'm also using a rally-dash m8 connector distribution box which works the same as the F2R power box.

Sorry, didn't answer your last question. I own two iPads that I can use for this and I have an iPhone 4 and a 6s that I can use. I'm involved in developing a green lane "overlay map" for the UK TRF and so I'll need to do some testing on these devices alongside my Garmin Montana during the development so....I'm very interested, can't speak directly for @MultiDoc and I totally get that you need to figure out if the effort is justifiable...I really can't comment to how big the market could be for you but I do believe that your Bluetooth version does a good job of credentialising you and your abilities. I'm happy to speak offline to see what we can do as there are a number of guys in the UK who appear to be highly interested in digital roadbooks riding but aren't necessarily on advrider but are generally on one Facebook group or another.

@alongat Thanks for the response, the last question was more for others out there reading this. I have shunned Facebook but may have to give in to see some other groups.

I am concerned that the RNS or other flavors of trip computer, while using a 3 wire connector, aren't using the same pins for the same functions. I don't know that there is 'standard' out there for rally gear, maybe there is and I just haven't seen enough devices to make that call. I know I can make one that would work for your setup and be plug and play, no problem. The others are just unknowns. If someone has a RNS setup and will take the time to draw me a map of the pins on the connector that would be very helpful.

RNS=ICO as far as M8 3 pin remote standards go.
Aurora=f2R as far as roadbook M8 4pin standards go (D, correct me if Im wrong). MD and others don't supply M8 connectors and use various others.
PM me if you want the pinouts, but if you have the f2r remote you have all the info you need.

If you send me a PM with your Facebook name, I can share one or two closed groups that I think would the correct audience for you to gauge the market demand that way you’re not just throwing crap on a wall and seeing where it sticks while exposing yourself to the eternal fountain of useless shit that Facebook is :)

Bluetooth switches for normal RB. I'd want them too and wanted to start a project on that. No cables? Who could resist this solution?
@rides2little, do keep me updated. With the controller we have, where you can hook two RB switches, I can get some proper testing in some proper races as they could go cable for the main switch and BT for their auxiliary switch, so the riders feel safe if you know what I mean.

I am trying to catch up with everything. Stealth atm because of Dakar and Eco Race, I have seen the pm's too and will catch up with them guys, don't shoot me yet

D, are you talking a dongle to connect to a paper roadbook? Ie, arduino wireless switch to drive the roadbook via bluetooth remote? Seems complicated?

@640 Armageddon I think you misread my intent. I was thinking of traditional buttons/toggles with a digital roadbook. You would just connect to the bluetooth box using M8 connectors. A way to get traditional setup users to use digital for training, etc.

I agree with Gany that the wireless full traditional would be problematic to say the least.

I have had a few questions on what the latest mounting options are for a lite setup. This is what I have been running lately. I have about 600 miles (>2000 now as of Jan 2019) so far with no issues, other than a loose nut on the bar mount portion and I knew that was going to happen the first ride and was prepared with the correct wrench easily accessible, hasn't budged since, even with some good drops and compressions. It comes on or off the bike in one piece in less than 5 minutes if I just leave the U-bolt Ram mount on the bars.

The only 'modifications' I did were to drill the back RAM plate to match the tablet holder because I was impatient on trying to find the right RAM part to fit and then to put two sheet metal screws into the back slider portion of the tablet holder since it is only spring loaded and I wanted it a bit more secure but it might work fine as is. You can see the screws on either side of the BT button controller box. Also a few well placed holes for some wire management zip-ties, don't pull too tight.

You can get away with the single U-bolt mount if you put some heat shrink on the U and use the short version of the arm instead of the standard.

This is probably the cheapest way to try out Rally Navigation short of a tupperware setup where you are hand turning the roadbook.

I don't rally, but I use iPad mini for my navigation with GAIA GPS or MotionX GPS apps. - I'd love to have at least a three button remote to control:
-the existing GPS radio settings: off, on (oriented due north), on (oriented by direction of travel)
-zoom in
-zoom out

Have you done / seen anything like this yet?

@Diddly Sorry I didn't see this sooner. I haven't done what you are asking about before. The board can be setup as a keyboard, so if there is some function on a keyboard that does what you are after it should be theoretically possible. The programming of the board isn't that difficult and can be re-written to many times with new programs/functions.

Interesting. - looks like IOS only recently allowed keyboard shortcuts. Would probably need a Bluetooth keyboard to test if there were shortcuts for the GPS settings and zoom. Or email app developer..
