Thanks matey...........I am sure that it will last me a long while.
I have had my F800gs for about 6 months within the first 5000 miles I am now going on my third gas tank due to the gas tank splitting and I have had the kick stand censor recalled. BMW customer relations fails to recognize there is an issue with the gas tank and said at this point there is no redesigned tank in the works from BMW. The very polite woman Heather I spoke with suggested to file a complaint with NHSTA if they get a enough complaints regarding the issue they will force a recall. So I have included a link below if anyone wishes to file a complaint.
I think the oldest tanks were single wall, the newer ones are double-wall so might or might not be considered a safety hazard. I did file a complaint just the same.
My point for the append is that if it cracks again and it's not big enough to be worrysome .. wait until just before the end of your 3-year warranty to get it replaced. All parts installed by a BMW dealer carry a 2-year warranty so you will basically get an extra two years coverage against tank cracking...
I've collected that T-shirt.
two popular theories on the cracking are ethanol in the gas or the charcoal canister system....
I set up a poll over here a while back:
but it's not really a very good indicator as most bikes with canisters also get "blessed" with having to use ethanol-laced gasoline....
Is there a pic of what a cracked tank looks like? I don't even know what to look for.
Are the 2013 F800GS affected?
I received a recall letter from BMW to replace the battery (f700gs manufactured in September 2013)
Me either. I think it's just the shell of the tank not the tank itself.
Every tank ever made for this model is suspect.
Read through the many pages of cracked tank thread for pics and all. OH MY.
Yup, still need more coffee this am.
But then we were left speechless when bikes in the showroom cracked in the crate on the way over to NA.
Here's one just starting:
and yes AFAIK all models could be affected............
and it's damned hard for either one of THE TWO OF US to be left speechless...........
So is the part that looks dirty in the crevice the crack? Does this cause a problem?
Here's a better picture:
Looks like a crack in the outer shell. Guesses I'll have to check mine. How come not all have the issue?
That is an outstanding question ... but I don't think anyone has the answer....
At this point I'm speculating that it might have something to do with either material or process variations in the manufacturing process...
but WTF do I know..........
It's worth keeping and eye on, but unless the crack is huge I would wait until the warranty is just about to expire before getting the tank replaced.
My 2009 is obviously past warranty. Is it just cosmetic?
As I said before, it's not a PROBLEM it's just a concern. Sure it sucks on a new bike and by all means get it fixed under warranty BUT it won't leak due to that so you don't see them go up in flames like a rear-ended Pinto. (google it young fellas)
Her 09's showing signs of cracking and somehow I ended up with 3 fuel tank assemblies with pump, controller and all for peanuts really. If I get bored enough I'll change it but there's a good chance the ones in the shed will crack while hanging on the wall. There are tanks in the FM and on Ebay that just don't sell at any price.
Worry about what oil to use, not the non-warranty tank crack.
Oh mine oser
Yup my bike have all the symptoms (Tank crack, leaky gasket....etc)
But I just live with it and ride no time to worry
Sorry Gangplank, your post snuck in before mine and it looks like I'm hassling you. Not the case.
Cosmetic. Fill it with black silicone if that's your thing. Keep the mud out.
Lol!! I didn't read it that way. Agree!!
What gas to use? My sticker wore off. Lol!!
