If KTM can sell the 390 for under $5K, why wouldn't you expect a BMW of smaller size to be within another $1-2K or so?

If they can resist the typical Teutonic over complication of vehicles that is.

KTM made a big strategic move by opening up production of the 390 in India.

Looks like BMW is following them down that path: "The BMW G310R is a naked motorcycle developed by BMW Motorrad in collaboration with TVS Motor Company. It marks BMW's first modern sub-500cc bike and the first BMW bike not to be manufactured in Europe."

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_G310R

It seems risky to me, eventually they'll sell everything to everybody and lose their brand identity, like Japan did. It's like selling off the family jewels to make the quarterly numbers look better.

Here goes Mercedes with its CLA, and of course forbes is delighted with its short-term results:

dunno, things do change, quality in the far east may rise, and the "German worker" is probably less what one envisions year by year in any case. It's not like you need blue eyes to stick a motor into a frame.

A new $5K bike would sure look out of place at a BMW Motorrad dealer sitting next to the $25K GSAs and $1200 riding suits. Good luck charging somebody $500 to install a new brake rotor in a $5000 bike.

This may kill it for me. Most new stuff is piled with complications I just don't want. 3 different electronic settings for suspension ride and they all still bottom out. That 390 Adventure has appeal....coming from a guy who wanted/wants to "transalp" his CBR250. I grabbed that bike new/leftover in 2015 for 3k. A bit more power or ratio spread would be nice.

Just got back from another 800+ mile weekend ride to the California mountains, the little Duke 390 worked fantastic! We rode in weather from 118 in Death Valley and below sea level to 48 degrees up in the mountains above 11,000 feet and the bike never missed a beat. The Wife even tossed it in a corner (crashed) doing 40 MPH, she lost the front end trail braking - and all was good. The bike fired right back up and rode flawlessly.
Just an update on our personal experience with the quality of the India make 390 Duke.

Wife after the crash - forgot to get a pic with the bike on the ground:

Death Valley in the middle of June - 115 degrees at this point in the day and all the foreign tourist. Could not believe this many people where out there and I've been coming to DV for 40 years, and to think they where looking at us like we were crazy. It has only been in the last 10 years that the Death Valley hotels have been staying open during the summer.

Sure, I think BMW should make it. Does the world NEED it? No. . But the rally raid version will be cool to look at ;)

Personally I think BMW should have continued to refine the XChallenge, but thats another speculation thread.

Yep. A 320 pound 650 xchallenge would be way better than a 350 lb 310. Way to heavy for the power. If the gs can come in 325 or lighter than I would consider it. The 310 r is 350 lb. Pig!

I'm actually considering one of these:

    http://www.cscmotorcycles.com/CSC-Motorcycles-RX3-Adventure-p/zrx3.htm

If it was a 350 - 400 cc twin I'd be all over it. But for now I'm converting an old DR 350 into a DR 450 Adventure...

I'd much rather have a Japanese 350 - 400cc twin decked out with soft bags and decent suspension, but they don't want to build it.

Not sure if I should post this here.. Since it's not a parallel but a Thumper but it looks like the little G310R Thumper will get an Adventure brother.

Let's hope BMW will launch this in Europe and the States as well. Would be a good idea, looking at the online demand for lightweight, affordable and reliable Adv bikes!

    http://www.maxxmoto.be/nieuws/spypics-bmw-g310-gs/

Article is in Dutch but basically it says that they've spotted these little GS'es with thr G310 engine and that the bikes look very production ready. They might even reveal it at the Intermot next week in Germany. Fingers crossed!

The world needs a G400-450GS that runs similar weight to a DR-Z400S, with a wide-ratio 6spd. 'Nothing high-strung, but it shouldn't be limp on power or suspension.

I'm throwing the bank at trying to make my F650GS, 2006 Dakar, as dirt worthy as possible for lightweight offroad touring and stripped trail riding. If still too much a handfull I will look at a smaller lighter weight dirt worthy bike. I'm American and have ridden everything over the last 45 years. I'm 55 now and want lighter and more nimble miles from home on extended tours. I'm looking for fun, not work, and the prospect of picking up a dumped bike is very real...and I'm not getting any stronger. If this new bike comes in at around 325lbs wet, they have my intrest.
