    Hey y'all -
    On the road currently with not a lot of Internet access...but I thought I'd pose a question and catch up up later.

    My low fuel light quit working. Everything else on the dash (lights) seem to be working, a cursory check of wiring didn't yield anything. All is running fine.

    Thoughts? Anyone else have the light quit? Sorry if this had been covered - just not a great connection to do a lot of searching.

    I found all my wiring to be frayed inside the fuel pump assembly. Could be why mine no longer worked, and possibly yours.
    To be clear, I use the term frayed but I really mean there was no longer any coating over the wires, leaving them exposed.

    This is a common thing to break. It's either the wiring or it's the little wire/resistor that BMW uses in the sensor. Either way, just set your trip odometer after you fill up.

    I'm currently having some oil frustrations..
    when I first bought the bike, I wasn't sure what oil was in it, so I walked into the local MX shop and told them what I had for a bike, they looked it up in the computer and sold me the Bel Ray Thumper oil (said it was what was recommended for the bike out of the Bel Ray line, what they carried). I didn't pay much attention to it, put it in, seemed fine, I've ridden about 800 miles, and its starting to feel like the clutch is slipping, I ordered new friction plates, doing the updated cover (with a tr650 cover) and figured I'd change the oil at the same time. Which brings me to which is confusing and annoying, I called up the BMW dealer to order up a filter, clutch cover gasket, and he even talked me into buying the BMW oil. I told him what I was running for oil, and he said that he agreed that it could cause the clutch to slip, and to run the BMW oil. Everything arrived, I looked at the oil, and it has the same rating as the Bel Ray! Both oils are rated SFI SM, not SF/SH like the manual states.. I don't want to start an oil debate, but whats the deal here? What are you guys running for oil in your Xch's?

    There have been stories from people who's clutch started slipping after changing the oil. I have had the very same thing happening to me.
    It can be trial and error. On my old F650 I had that changing from one oil to another (no sir, that's the same oil, just a different packaging)
    On my X I changed from mineral oil to full synthetic without any problem.
    My local MX guy however told me that the friction plates can harden out swapping between certain oils causing slippage.
    I changed to Castrol Power 1 Racing 4T 10W-50
    It's good stuff as far as I can tell and I've used that for two years and about 10.000 Miles.

    The same rated oil doesn't mean the oil additives are the same. I have seen a great deal of difference between how different oil can change how a clutch will behave one my families trials bikes and the additive packages is about the only explanation.

    My experience is that if you change it back to an oil that didn't slip before it could take 2 changes before it starts working correctly again. I haven't had any issues on a second change however that's a different type of bike so take that for what its worth.

    I had the clutch slipping problem with a Castrol synthetic with friction modifiers. Under low loads and in the lower gears it was not too pronounced, but in the higher gears and under heavier throttle loads slippage would become obvious. When I started running Castrol 4T 20W50 that I put in my old Brit bikes the problem went away. Like Jonnyc21 said it took a couple of oil changes to make the clutch start working properly again. I generally buy oil by the case so the Castrol synthetic ended up in my boxer and the X is on a steady diet of SG oil now. As the manual states...

    "Mineral engine oils of API classification SF to SH. BMW Motorrad recommends not using oil additives, because they can have a detrimental effect on clutch operation. BMW Motorrad recommends not using synthetic oils for the first 10,000 km."

    Hi, I run Castrol in all my bikes... currently in the Xc I run the Castrol Actevo X TRA 4T. I have no issues works well for me.

    My bike had its first at 9800 miles and was one was slightly out. Had this done when I bought it and under two previous owners it seemed to have had a very easy life with mainly street rides.
    I plan to do the checks at 6k if I ever get seat time this year!

    I recently switched to Ravenol 4T Ester 10W50. I noticed slight increase in fuel economy and a slightly smoother running engine from the previous oil. (Shell)

    Valve Adjustments. I'm on 25000km and will check valves at next service.

    $30 is ridiculous for that small standard electrical connector. I bet it can be sourced elsewhere.

    Can you find a small number molded into the connector anywhere?

    I'm up away from my bike until Monday, but can look at the replacement connector then.

    I would think the existing plug on the bike would potentially have information on it as well, if you want to check around sooner.

    For what it is worth I did a google search and found nothing on that part number.
    But I also called three dealerships and they assured me I needed a whole new fuel pump assembly.
    Why are BMW dealers so shitty in Denver? They are a complete waste of time. They do not fix anything, only replace.

    Come to NYC. They're terrible here too! I order everything from maxbmw because of how bad BMW of Manhattan is (and how expensive).

    It's a little unusual. Usually, the lock tab is located on the water seal side of the connector. On this one the tab is on the side into which the water seal inserts.

    Why blame the dealers? They just sell what BMW NA gives them. This is a situation where your inventiveness / google / amazon come into play if you don't want to pay full price for the whole assembly. I would find a way to fix it myself for that kind of money.

    Looks like some preventative measures are the oder of the day, will pay attention while doing the head gasket this weekend.....
