Opening Ceremony at East Kalimantan Police HQ.

Indonesians love pomp & ceremony. Our expedition seemed like a good excuse for the powers that be to have a knees up, so for a couple of hours we are exposed to the whole media circus of journalists & TV crews, cultural performances, dancing police women, speeches from dignataries and sponsors, another meal, karaoke, moto girls , and multiple photo shoots for the sponsors that included Ford Indonesia who had donated 3 vehicles , 2 of which were carrying all of the riders gear, parts, fuel, water & food. :clap

    .

We are now riding pretty fast trying to catch up with the 4x4's who have all passed us.

We stop to check these guys out, but they wave us on.

We have a road book with directions to follow, but on day 1 we prefer to be with the group. We start passing some of the slower jeeps.

We are riding fun open trails that flow through palm plantations. This first taste of Borneo's riding and scenery is great.

Rudy now has problems with his MSR front fender bag as it falls off several times during the afternoon.

It then ends up in his rear wheel and a difficult extraction is required.

Eca then realises that all his waterproof gear isn't on his bike so he leaves us to go back and find it.

Crikey - this is pretty straight forward riding but the shit seems to be hitting the fan already.

Whilst we wait some locals come out of the woods to inspect us and our bikes.

The slower jeeps start passing us again.............

After an hour Eca returns with his rain gear and so we saddle up and once again chase the convoy.

As 30 jeeps are in front of us its pretty straight forward to follow them as we are just waved on in the right direction by people on the side of the trail.

Sometimes we have to stop and check the roadbook.

All of the local offroad riders have now left us apart from one guy on a new KLX 125 4 stroke who isn't sure how far he's going. He's riding like a mad man though, and crashes out a few times.
These bikes are pretty new here and only cost about $2,500. Their becoming pretty popular with local offroaders in Indonesia. However they weigh nearly as much as an XR400 so have definite disadvantages, as he was to find out in a day or so.

By mid afternoon it gets really dark and we find ourselves in a huge rain and electrical storm. We ride on through it for 20 minutes and suddenly we're on tarmac again in a village. A real piece of luck.

We find a local warung to take cover in and wait out the storm, taking the opportunity to have a couple of Stella Artois beers.
There's no tax ticket on the cans so I guess they are smuggled over the border from nearby Malaysia.

By the time the rain has slowed down enough to ride, its nearly dark. We ride out into the rain and at times get hopelessly lost. The road book is really difficult to navigate by due to the rain and we have to stop and start at every intersection in the trail.

It is pitch black and I'm now leading the way as i have the only HID lamp in our group.
We spot what looks like the tracks of the 4x4's and although it seems to be going against the direction the road book shows, we make a group decision and follow them for several kilometres, before they end up in a small compound in the middle of a plantation. Wrong way - damn !

Soaked , covered in mud and pretty tired, 2 hours later at about 10 pm we eventually make it into camp. Most of the guys in the 4x4's were already asleep, but luckily the crew in the Fords are still awake, and help me locate my box inside one of the Ranger's.

The whole area is a complete quagmire but I manage to find a spot for my tent and raise it in the rain. Thankfully I've got some freeze dried meals so I get that down me and crash out.

Already this trip is no picnic.
