Does anyone recognize these gentlemen, trying to get in touch with them to forward this group photo, but the handle of BRDDOG122 that Tony gave me, does not seem to be valid....

I'm still, after more than a decade of this business, not entirely sure.

Owner dead. This is terrible news.

BOULDER JUNCTION - At 3:14 pm on Thursday, August 15th Vilas County 911 got a call about a UTV that rolled over, pinning the operator under it at the Camp Holiday Campground in Boulder Junction.

Campground management was able to use a tractor to lift the UTV off the operator. The operator was unconscious and CPR was performed.

The operator was transported to Howard Young Medical Center, but died on the way there.

The Vilas County Sheriff's Office and the DNR are investigating the incident.

    Damn.

When I checked in I told him I knew where my site was and he didn’t have to show me. He followed me out the door and said with a big grin that he wanted to show me because that way he got to drive his new toy...the UTV.

Very sad news, part of the fun was Ray helping you get setup. And catching up about him and everything.

I see that in lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to complete the bicycle path from town to the campsite. What an outstanding memorial that would be to his involvement in the community.

I think we will see more and more of this as long as these vehicles have loud exhausts. Even factory exhaust on most side by sides is so loud you have to wear hearing protection just to operate them. Do you think these towns are actually seeing much revenue from atv riders or do they lose other tourists due to the noise? The atvs and side by sides (as well as loud motorcycles) are like the loud drunk people at the campground. Just my 2 cents...

Exhaust noise is always and issue we try to stay on top of.

In this case, I think there are a few people that simply object to motorized recreation so they loudly oppose it.

I worked with Boulder Junction when they wanted to diversify by become a dual sport motorcycling destination. The business owners were solidly behind it. A small but vocal group objected and since their objections were more emotionally based rather than factually based it was difficult to create a better understanding with facts.

In the end the town adopted dual sport riding. The chamber promotes it. We have had rallies there for a few years for which they make us very welcome. One time the rally was during their big festival so they invited us to ride our motorcycles in the town parade which was very well received.

As far as noise goes, ATVs and dual sports don't really spend too much time in town except to spend money for gas, food, and lodging. The rest of the time they are pretty much invisible out in the forest. No noise problems there.

However, there are some street motorcycle rallies that include Boulder Junction so they get a strong dose of H-D exhaust noise right in the town on the town streets.

Keep in mind that many of their bicycle trails are positioned right next to the highways - the same highways that are used by all kinds of cars and trucks all the time. No one seems bothered by that noise. :dunno

The sky didn't fall when the town adopted dual sport riding. I doubt it will fall when they adopt ATVs. ATVs can be better controlled by restricting them to specific routes when they are in town. Our licensed dual sports can go anywhere any other licensed vehicle goes.

It is always an interesting fight when one side refuses logic for emotion. Thanks for all of your work up there. Looking forward to our next adventure in the Northwoods!
