I know I maybe "clutching" ( pardon the pun ) at straws but have you had the clutch basket off yet.

That broken piece looks like it might be from the back of the basket.

At least take the plates out for an initial inspection. Can't hurt.

Yep. That second pic of the "Unidentified Fcuked Object" looks to have a couple of gear tooth imprints on it.
    Good luck!

Yep 3legs that was my first port of call. Maybe the oil pump drive or something. Have the Granddaughter over today so sheds out of bounds :lol3

Tomorrow night if its not too hot I will tear the clutch basket out and have a look. It must be from that side of the motor as I can't see how anything could migrate from the internal main cases or the alternator/starter case side. Not something that size approx 30mm x 10mm x 3mm and bent to shit :imaposer

You might get more traffic if you change your thread title around some. Using key words in the title; such as broken, failure, cracked, loud band, and blood are all good ones to incorperate.

Have you looked at the cam drive gears in the heads?

The damage to the casing behind the impeller looks like the balance shaft has shifted? I'm not sure what else could exert the force to crack the case like that. But the balance shaft can't move due to the weights and sprockets on either end. So if it has moved, you need to check the main cases for damage around where the shaft bearings are.

My guess is something broke in the head, and the debris got caught in a cam chain and applied to the balance shaft at high speed :(

Why a hardened steel component would break in the first place is a mystery though.

I had a similar problem, in my case it was a cam chain guide that snapped, the plastic fragment got stuck in a cam chain, and caused it to jump a few teeth. Still got that engine in bits, really must get around to doing something with it...

Steel band on clutch basket was my initial guess even if it looks like the piece had some holes drilled into it.

And not sure if the early baskets had that?

And there should be alot more pieces since engine cover is off.

Sprag bearing? But that is on the other side of the engine.

Hope we get an update soon.

DirtyADV I think you have it. You beat me to it. A mate and I did another look through the Service Manual and I think this is what I'll find when I get over the shed and pull the basket out
