Andre (@Amoller ) had something come up and Jeff (@Marbleminer ) took off to Colorado without us, so this weekend it was just going to be Don (@SloDon ) and I. I had done the 24,000 mile service, including an early valve check, on the Super Tenure 2 weekends ago which caused a valve cover leak resulting I'm me wrenching for another weekend and missing out on riding last weekend. This weekend looks like it was going to be my best opportunity to ride for a while and for forecast was shaping up from the prediction of rain, rain and more rain this weekend to damn near perfect riding weather. I talked Don into an over nighter as long as we didn't camp. I played with some routes on Friday, got us a Cabin at Cherohala Mountain Trails Campground and we planned to meet up Saturday morning. Our route would take us North East through Georgia to Western North Carolina. West across NC to Eastern Tennessee to Tellico Plains for the night. The following day, we'd ride some more of Tennessee and then head back south towards Home.

We met up at the Dwarf House in Woodstock, GA. For thouse that are not familiar with them, they are a Chick-Fil-A with sit down dining and an expanded menu... there's a dozen or so of these in the Atlanta area. Each has a little Dwarf Door in the front that you can actually go through.
    20170805_082502.jpg 20170805_092212.jpg

And I know those Chick-Fil-A cow adverts make you want to "Eat More Chicken", but at a Dwarf House, you can get a Burger and a Steak.
    20170805_084844.jpg

I dove into the Buffet and ate way too many Chick-Fil-A breasts and bacon... Don was good and had an Omelet.

Time to hit the road... Don's on his fairly new R1200GSA and I'm on my 2yo Super Tenere. The route would have us hitting a mix of back roads, dirt roads and twisties. Our first stop would be at Two Wheels of Suches. The first dirt we got to was FS28-1 and we'd go past the 4-H Camp Wahsega, then past Camp Merrill where the US Army trains Rangers. After that, we'd take Coopers Gap Road and come out just south of TWoS on Hwy 60.

At TWoS, we took a little break, got something to drink and sat on the front porch to shoot the bull with the other riders.
    20170805_114023.jpg 20170805_115604.jpg

We headed up Woolf Pen Gap road.. there was some sort of commotion in the real twisty bits where a few bikes, a car and a Sheriff's car were in one of the hairpins.. we decided to just keep on going ("move along, nothing to see here").

We proceeded North East towards Clayton, GA. I had an optional section here that I wasn't sure of, but it turned out to be a great section that I had indeed ridden on before. Popcorn Road and Patterson Gap. At the beginning of Popcorn, there was an old sign that said Bridge Out. Popcorn had a few little water crossings and I don't think there was ever a bridge to be out... probably someone's attempt to keep the tourists out.
    20170805_133630.jpg

We eventually popped out in Dillard, GA. Time to de-hydrate and rehydrate at the local gas station.

So we fell into the traffic on US 441 for a few miles, crossed into North Carolina, and took a left to the Coweta Hydrologic Labs. It had been a while since I had been through here, but I don't remember the road being blocked and you getting routed through the Coweta Labs facility (but I'm getting old and forgetful, so who knows how long it's been like that).

The road had been freshly graded (the road grading equipment was still there) and then it had rained the night before... the roads were a bit greasy and we decided it best to take it easy towards Standing Indian Campground .

We took another break at Hurricane Creek. We took some "poser" shots in this massive water crossing!!

Rainbow Springs was next... there's a funky house that sorta juts into the road and has a waterfall next too it. It's a Photo-Op/Kodak Moment.

Coming down towards Wayah Road, a clearing opened up with a terrific view! Everything is so green right now!

At the end of Rainbow Springs Rd, We checked the time. 4:30 already. We had a lot of dirt planned still and we needed to make up some time.
FS711 got cut from the route and we headed over to Robbinsville to gas up. Wayah road is a blast to ride anyhow.
At Robbinsville, we decided to just take the Cherohala Skyway to Tellico Plains. So FS81, North River Road and River Road got cut too.

We ended up behind a Pirate Parade.. and I'm not fast, so they were really slow. We decided to pull into Lake View Overlook and let them get down to road a bit.
    20170805_183206.jpg 20170805_183244.jpg

We could not have asked for a better day to ride.

We headed to Cherohala Mountain Trails Campground.
Wayne, who runs CMT, greeted us and gave us the keys to Cabin #2. I got another sticker for the panniers.

    20170805_192134.jpg

Then off to the Tellicafe for dinner. Pretty good food and since we skipped lunch, we were hu-hu-hungry!

Back to CMT for some "adult beverages", a cigar for Don and the fire pit.

I guess CMT is looking for more revenue streams than just Motorcyclists... there was a family with some little kids that must have rented 3 cabins. Not complaining, just observing. The family was polite, friendly and quiet.

Up at sunrise to take advantage of the clean towels and showers that CMT has. If you've never stayed there, give them a try. The couple that run it take great care of you and Wayne's a rider.

Wayne cooked us some breakfast. Just ask at their little store and they'll make you a nice breakfast. $5 for eggs and way, sausage/bacon, biscuit and coffee.

Then we headed on down the road. Don wanted to get home around 2 or 3 and our route showed us taking about 5 hrs.

We left CMT and headed south down Reliance Road. This Morning we were en-route to see the Alien Launch Pad, the Aztec Ruins and the Big Leaky Pipe.
The route Had us take Kimsey Mountain Highway, but we decided to get off the pavement sooner and take Lost Creek Road instead.
    20170806_091741.jpg IMG_1237.jpg

We stopped at the Lost Creek Campground for a break, but didn't stay too long. There were USFS Interns taking surveys of people using the campground and we didn't want to take a survey.

Now.. is it FS 236 or FS 23B? Don and I have both seen it labeled as both, but not sure which is correct.
Anyway, we took that road North to the Alien Launch Pad and Aztec Ruins.

I think some Jugalo Hamsters have taken up residency under the Launch Pad.
The ground underneath it was covers in Cedar Shavings and there was Faygo Pop cans in the fire pit.

"Would You Just look At it?!" A guy I used to work with used to say that all the time. I doubt it was him tagging up the Alien's Property though.

A little walk down the trail gets you to the Mayan Ruins. I had know idea they settled this far north! Some must have hooked up with some of the local Cherokee at some point.

Hmmm... the MCFARLAND door is unlocked. What secret is behind it??

Off to find the Big Leaky Pipe a bit further down FS236 (or is that FS23B???) and off some side road that's not on the map, but for some reason, I think it might be FS23A. This road was less used than I remember it being.

Water was shooting a good 2 feet out of the top of the pipe.
    20170806_105319.jpg 20170806_105338.jpg 20170806_105359.jpg

Does anyone know where, if anywhere, the road goes after you turn back to get to the Leaky Pipe after going under it?

We headed down FS236/23B to McFarland Road. The route had us go right, but we decided to go left. Less dirt, but get us home a bit earlier.
We popped out in Turtletown. I guess everyone's got all the schooling they need in Turtletown and no need for a school anymore.
    20170806_112655.jpg

We took 68 to 60 into Blueridge, GA, and treated ourselves to lunch and a Blizzard.

    20170806_115850.jpg 20170806_120016.jpg 20170806_122629.jpg

That's the end of the pictures... from there we took Aska Road to Stanley Creek Rd that turns to dirt and becomes Rock Creek Road. Then down Hwy 5/515 to East Ellijay and caught some more dirt on Talona Rd by Panorama Orchard's Store. After that we took back roads down through Jasper and then jumped on the Super Slab to get home.

Don't you hate how these trip reports sorta peter out as they get to the end and the author/photographer sorta gives up?!?!

CMT is not a motorcycle only campground and hasn't been since Wayne bought it. I have stayed there several times and it's still mostly motorcyclists staying there and Wayne is a really great host.
