California drivers pull over- YES! Lane splitting is LEGAL in California. Note that it's ILLEGAL in the rest of the country.

Doesn't mean it doesn't happen, just means they can ticket you for it, and in many places will be rather gleeful about it.

image.jpg image.jpg Now at Tecopa Springs feels like I am on the set of a Tarantino movie meets spaghetti western!

Drawn in by an Internet cafe with NICE food great people and poor internet! Feeling forgiving as it does feel like I am a long way from anywhere. Decided to pull up stumps today at 1.00pm and chill here rather than do Death Valley at the worst time of day.

Will ride thru at first light Tequilla dependent ....

Here are some shots from ride and the spa pools ...

    Man, I miss the desert.

And you're ballsy as hell to hit the Mojave, J-Tree, Death Valley, etc, in August. Carry LOTS of water- like, a gallon of emergency water plus what you'll need for the day. A breakdown can be fatal out there. But you're from Australia, you probably know that.

If you haven't yet, figure out how to recognize rattle snakes, black widow spiders, and poison oak. All three are all over the West, and poison oak, while rare, does exist in some pretty bizarre places.

First wireless in 36 hrs ...

Well much to report on here. Yesterday travelled from Tecopa Springs via Death valley (105 deg at 0630!!!). stopped at Badwater - 238 feet then an amazing road thru Sherman Pass (10,000 ft) before dropping off the Hill only to climb it again to sleep at Batch Park where I was visited by a bear!

On the road again back into mountains to cut across to highway and run North. Will sleep at Yosemite tonight before I then treat my self to a cabin and shower :)

Will get some pics up later!

So at the start of this you picked up a new (or new to you) bike in the states, and congrats! Are you planning to ship it home after the adventure or sell it here? And naturally following what seems like a trip of a lifetime!....

Not sure...current plan is either over winter here and come back for more next year ? Alaska ? Or ship to Europe or home or sell ... Clearly no strong plan! AK looks pretty hard to do!

As for the bike I LOVE it? Goes round bends like its on rails and lots of grunt. You don't notice the 50kg of gear and water I carry.

Didn't quite make Yosemite I got caught up in a bunch of amazing back roads visiting places like:

    Springvale
    Three Rivers
Giant forest on the 198 (great road shame about speed limits and no of cars)
    Piedra
    Trimmer
    Tollhouse
Before the heat got me and I have stopped early at Shaver Lake. Feeling a bit cooked.

It was weird the heat got me today end though it "only" hit 94.5- I think it was more humid and slower going with lots of tight little winding roads with plenty of poor surface, cows and deep shade/bright sun changes to keep you focussed

Off for a beer now! Will post pics seperatly as wifi is slow

I grew up not 15 miles from Tollhouse. Shaver is neat. Been a long time since I've been down that way...

    Peter,

I just returned home to Kentucky from Alaska. If I can do it, so can you! You've got the right bike, but you'll need a spare gas can for the GS. I ride a 2008 R1200GSA and with 9 gallons in the tank I didn't need a spare can. We had a siphon hose in case one of the Stroms needed gas from my tank. They each carried a spare gallon. No issues though, we had good weather.

I've been to Sydney a time or two, years ago. Also, Alice Springs. Love the people there! I flew cargo planes back then, and it was nice when the ground rep tossed the crew a beer!

So much to see in Alaska it's hard to make a suggestion. I rode to Dead Horse at the end of the Dalton Highway and loved the challenge of bad roads and unpredictable weather. I've wanted to attend Burning Man for a while. This was the year for Alaska. 12,105 miles in 26 days. I'm a camper and stayed in rooms 5 nights total.

Next year I plan to ride to Nova Scotia and ride the Cabot Trail.

Sounds like things are going very well for you. Keep us updated.
